Have you visited Case’s campus? Would a four season location appeal to you? What about distance from home and the associated travel costs? Don’t know that you will get many people that have visited both campuses to give you feedback.

I can’t visit Case’s campus: it’s really far because I live in So. California.
I don’t really like the fact that it’s in Cleveland because it’s really cold there…
but I do know that they’re extremely good in the medical field.

Your chances of getting into medical school are much better with a degree from CWRU than from Davis. And your classes will be much smaller at CWRU (which means you’ll get more attention from your profs), as the freshman class at Davis is the approximately the size of the entire UG student body at CWRU.

but I believe my GPA at Davis would be higher than at CWRU…?

GPAs at large state universities are usually lower than at private universities. This is due to the greater use of the grading curve within larger-sized classes.

My son is at Case ,a Junior ,and getting similar aid package . He loves Case ,but coming from NJ hates Cleveland area .I think they have underground tunnels so you don’t have to be out when it’s 20 degrees . Davis is not by the water , and not as pretty as coastal campuses . Good luck !!

I know I am about a year off, but I am having the EXACT same dilemma… what did you end up deciding?

OP went to Davis

UC Davis, along with other UCs, has been hit hard by drops in state funding. Class sizes are getting very large, and many majors are “impacted”. I am also not thrilled by the radicals at UCD who have been in the news lately (the “students” who got pepper-sprayed). I would think twice before choosing UC over CWRU.

^i don’t know what you are implying by “students.” No quotes belong there, they are bona fide students.

I know UC Davis very well, having been on or around campus for many years. jamesschenn is completely correct about the enormous impact that severe cuts have had to the educational expereince; each student, each concentration has been compromised. It’s not even the same school as pre-budget crisis UCD. But there are dozens of threads that have already covered this ground.
The students involved in the occupy protests were no different than any other collection of true believers on any campus. I think JS is implying that rent-a-mobs and non-enrolled individuals jumped into the pile–again, just like every one of these around the world.

You’re not going to score easier marks at UCD; your chances of shadowing and research at UCD are diminutive; weeder classes abound with less assistance than ever; not a particularly beautiful location. IMO it doesn’t compare favorably with CWRU.

My California son is at Case right now on an overnight. He applied to both Davis and Case. Wait listed at Davis, some merit aid at Case, free flight to Case for the weekend. Some prospective students received a boarding pass in their snail mail financial aid packet. If you did, you should call up and take advantage of the opportunity. You should not attend a college without seeing it first. Case is a culture shock for people who do not live in urban city environments and those who are not used to harsh weather.

We are pleasantly surprised how beautiful the Case campus is: Frank Gehry Mgt. bldg, beautiful scuptures and art on campus, beautiful landscaping, architecture. Really nice dorms, FREE laundry, printing, bus/city transportation, admissions to museums, etc. Upper class dorms are beautiful - new bldgs. Academics #9 Bioengineering (U.S.News), 9:1 faculty/student ratio. New Think box lab, that lets students create 3D models of their ideas, with new Think Box Bldg in the works, New Student Union in the works, 3 Hospitals literally across the street, great for nursing students, etc to fulfill their clinic hours, Cleveland Symphony (Severance Hall) on campus, Amazing dining hall, floor to ceiling windows overlooking trees/grass, great food options! We are thoroughly impressed. Wind Turbine windmill on campus (cool). Officially, it is an urban campus, but it feels like Cornell but more spacious and prettier. The campus is gorgeous and not as unsafe as I thought it would be. outlying areas do not look as bad as Yale’s, UPenn’s, Columbia’s, John’s Hopkins etc “bad” neighbors. Cleveland was also surprisingly beautiful. Amazing architecture, restaurants, clubs. Only about 20 mins. away, students get free ride on bus. Restaurants seem cheaper than those in NYC. And importantly, generous merit and financial aid. (FYI- Boston Univ. won’t let you bring your own fridge, but you have to rent from them at $250/yr). At Case, you can even paint one wall of your dorm in any color!!! Upper class dorms, have private gyms, Starbucks. Where is all this money coming from? I think my son is going here… but, we have one more campus to visit… RPI. Anybody with info?

The Urban campus is no way what I thought it would be… My son took classes at Columbia and Hunter College in NY and we have walked through NYU many times and those are what I would call Urban campuses!! We visited Boston U. and Commonwealth Ave. (the main street where BU is lined up) was a like rush hour on the L.I.E. Case’s campus is spacious and gorgeous. Definitely does not feel like you are even in a “city”. Most people walking on campus, are students. It is not a thoroughfare for non students, like Columbia, Boston, NYU.

So totally agree with jujumak. D has Regents Scholarship at Davis, Boston College Honors program and Case with Merit Aid. For a young Adult I can imagine the confusion as I am in no better position as a Parent.

Davis is close to home and with Regents Scholarship it is possible to finish in 4 years as she will have priority registration.

Case cost is very comparable to Davis, but for a Pre-Med I can’t imagine a better place with the number of Hospitals within a walking distance of the school.

Boston College will be a quarter of a million dollar investment and even with a Honors admission is it really worth the price. Is it worth putting that amount of pressure on a Young adult?

We have done overnights in all these schools and each of them have their own Pros and Cons. Wish it was as easy to answer Case vs UC Davis.

Reasons for the parent to lean towards Case:
University Circle is one of the best campus areas we have seen
Hospitals within walking distance
Research opportunities abound
Dorms and Dining more comparable to Davis and far superior than BC (D hates their Honors housing)
Pre-Med advising comparable to BC not quite sure about Davis
Medical Anthropology specialization within the Anthropology department. BC doesn’t have an Anthropology department. At Davis they have an Exercise Biology.
Smaller Student Body

The only Con I can think of is the fact that it is Cleveland and walk 20 minutes out of University Circle and it is mostly all down hill from there. As for the weather, well it is an individual preference. If one was worried about that why even bother applying there in there first place.
