Does anyone have any insight into engineering at Case Western? My son was accepted and his merit aid brings it into line with his safety schools that offer tuition exchange with our state. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

We visited Case with DS in Feb 2009 and were all favorably impressed - with a high scholarship, it offers a lot of value. DH and I are both engineers and really enjoyed our touring. We also were quite surprised to learn how many Nobel Prize winners were from Case.

You can find more details in the Case threads. He didn’t end up attending, but he probably would have picked it over our state flagship (approx same net cost to us).

Case has a very solid engineering program. It is arguably the best in it’s state (though I am sure some Buckeye’s will flame me for that).

I’m from the Cleveland area, but I wanted to get away for school. The school is looked at very favorably here. Especially anything linked to medical with the Cleveland Clinic so close.

It’s likely going to boil down to Cal Poly, WPI, RPI and Case. He’s OOS for Poly, but it’s still a reasonable value and has a good ME program. The rest all have strengths and weaknesses (as does Poly, but as a left coaster, he quite likes the fit). It’ll come down to his gut.

It is one of the top picks for my daughter BME - pre-med, it has been on her radar for several years. We have made several visits and she has registered for her admitted student’s weekend. She as two other programs on the table so it will be an April decision, that is a surprise since she was Case all the way until two late visits that ave nothing to do with Case’s quality but the variety of the other two programs.

We visited RPI too, and it’s a great place if the right fit. (It’s even more “STEM-y” than Case"). For our high-stats son (hs 2010), the merit scholarship at Case was MUCH better than RPI.

Our son was awarded the Rensselear Medal, so he knows what his minimum award is there (15/yr). It could go higher. WPI was surprisingly low given his stats. That’s too bad as it is a strong contender for him.

Did you try to get merit awards adjusted based on what he got elsewhere? It might get you a few thousand more if he is a strong student. WPI would consider RPI and Case both to be peer institutions… In our case we had our guidance counselor fax them copies of Case’s letter. WPI did increase it, but not to Case’s level. Luckily he got an automatic boost in his merit at WPI by graduating second in his class
Case is sometimes more generous than RPI or WPI with east coast students since it is harder to lure east coast kids to consider Cleveland. No offense intended, Cleveland! We heard that directly from an admissions director at another school who used to work at Case. He correctly predicted how much merit my son would get from Case.
We had visited Case and liked it a lot, but my son decided WPI was a better fit for him. Case seems a little more competitive, and that point was reinforced with the people we talked to at an accepted students event. :(

Do go to an admitted students’ day! I think you will be very impressed! Attend a class, speak with a professor, maybe do the overnight. My D is at Case (not Engineering) and hasn’t encountered the competitiveness…although I’m sure it exists there as well as everywhere to a degree…I’m sure someone on here can speak to the Engineering aspect.
Good Luck with your decision!

Thanks everyone for the input!

" WPI was surprisingly low given his stats. That’s too bad as it is a strong contender for him." - If he likes WPI, definitely go back at some point and ask them to reconsider their offer. It seems like the kind of school that would encourage bright students that like their approach.

I’ve been thinking about to applying to engineering major in case western too, but frankly I’m not impressed by this school

Riceiloveu…based on what? Help out by being more specific…

That’s sort of like saying I’m thinking of eating Lima beans, but I don’t like Lima beans.

Yes I would be curious to hear your specifics. There was never anything that was not impressive with Case.

@riceiloveu Not impressed by CWRU? I would love to know the things that do impress you. Unicorns, Easter Bunny? just joking.

bump

My D is a second year student at CASE in the BME program. And yes, she has expressed that CASE students are competitive. It’s not like people speak badly of one another but everyone internally feels the pressure. If that makes sense. She admits that the upper classman are less competitive because they are about to graduate but that freshman and sophomore classes tend to feel the need to compete. She just tries to keep the focus on doing her own thing and not worrying about eveyone else. I am not sure if being competitive is a bad thing, it’s more how each student handles it that really matters. My D was a high school athlete and you always wanted to practice with someone who was stronger than you or pushed you, so I see this the same way.

@BluePoodle how is your D’s doing in her BME program at CASE? I have heard that BME has the most rigorous course sequence than any other Engineering discipline. As result, BME majors GPA are lower. A 3.5 GPA in BME is rare.

Your opinion please.
