Hi, I want to know a little more about Case's reputation as a school. It's ranked 38 on the US and News ranking list and is considered one of the best universities in the country. But none of my friends here at Ithaca High School, New York has even heard of case! I just want to know more about how other's see Case as a school. What do you think?

so far the only person who knew about case's prestige was my friend who works at best buy. nobodyelse in atl's heard of case. i went to california 2weeks ago 'n still nobody's heard of case...

I think it's one of those schools that is highly respected by those "in the know", but people who aren't too familiar with most of the privates out there besides the obvious Ivy League/MIT/Stanford/etc. haven't really heard of it. :)

Case has long being considered one of the best institutions in science and engineering. It enjoys world-wide name recognition (and has always been considered one of the top 100 universities in the world). If you are looking for a high quality education and a path to a successful career, then you will not be disappointed with Case.

Case is very well known in the professional and post-undergraduate world. My turned down HARVARD, for case, back in 1980, and then went on to get his PhD from Caltech in nuclear physics...no joke.

I second GWEM27, the people who would be hiring you after you graduate have definately heard of Case.

Five years ago when my D was searching for colleges, I read in numerous sources that the Case undergraduate program is respected by the top graduate schools and that a Case degree will take you anywhere you want to go. Apparently the hard work Case requires (in some programs anyway) prepares students well for the rigors of graduate school. My D graduated last weekend from Case. I am astonished at how many of her friends are going to Med School next year. I am not aware of any of her friends who applied and did not get accepted to any med schools. The house master of her building in the Village was accepted to the PhD program at MIT. My D is headed to her first choice graduate program (at Harvard). If a student remains focused, Case will get you where you want to go.

Well, part of the problem is that you are in Ithaca. NY kids tend to know about the top ranked schools in NY and New England, the SUNYs and a couple top universities in the Mid-Atlantic. Case is handicapped in NYS by the fact that it is in the Midwest (although many Clevelanders would argue that they are Easterners). It is a great school even if it’s not well known by NYS residents.

N.B. : This thread has been here for quite some time. The current ranking is 41.

I know nothing about the school, but am going to look at it more closely, after seeing an ad in Mental Floss magazine.

Case Western is one of those excellent schools well-known in the Midwest that those on each end of the country may not have heard of.

In Ithaca have they heard of Rose-Hulman (Terre Haute, IN)? Ranked #1 in UG Engineering education, but small, and without a powerhouse football or basketball team, why would you have heard of it. But engineers and those who hire them know of it.

Case is a great school that is relatively unknown outside the midwest. I come from new england to go to Case. The reason to come is the people (ignore our complaints about Case we love to pick on it). But aside from that where Case is known to hiring managers, among employers and other institutions we have an amazing reputation. The bonus is if you are good enough to get into a “new ivy” or tech school (RPI, RIT) Case will give you lots of merit financial aid.

And you can apply online and there’s no application fee! At least that’s what the postcard said that my son got yesterday.

So you might as well apply and see what happens.
