hey i was wondering how people at duke get quick cash on campus

im out of state and my hometown doesnt have any branches of bank of america, suntrust, or wachova so my parents cant put money into any accounts there and i believe those are the only three atms on campus

im also sure that i dont want to carry around a semesters worth of cash on me

Get your folks to mail you a check or money order so you can deposit it when you get there.

Another way is to use online banking. Set up an account at wachovia/suntrust/BofA, then link that account to your parents account. Then your parents can transfer money electronically. That's what I do with my accounts at different banks...

Edit: except for tip money, you don't really need cash on campus. In my two years there so far, I've had to make one ATM withdrawal for $40, and that's to pay for toll fees on the drive home. For tip, bring lots of ones and fives.

It's been my experience that I've needed cash for many things, unlike SBR, but everybody is different with cash.

Both of SBR's suggestions are good. I just wrote a check to myself from my old bank account and deposited it at the Wachovia ATM the first day of classes (of course this is assuming you have an Wachovia account...). It took maybe 30 seconds and was by far the simplest method.

It depends on how much off-campusing you imagine you'll be doing. Yes, you can use a debit card and restaurants things like that, but if I go to starbucks to work off campus or something, I really prefer to use cash.

The biggest thing is going to be going out. If you anticipate you're going to be going to clubs off campus alot, most of them have $5-$10 cover, so you're going to need cash for that. I'm with HiWei...I withdraw pretty often from my bank acct when im at school.

I think the best situation is to get a bank acct. with one of the banks near campus. My roommate has a local bank, and it drives me INSANE because I give her rent checks and then I have like, $600 floating around in my account that I can't use for a month. You'll be MUCH better off if you get a Durham bank.
