^ haha.
I live here, and honestly it is not as bad as people say it is. I have pretty much visited all the dorms on/off campus and I think Castilian is a pretty good choice. The only thing I hate here is the food. It was good at the beginning but now it is just getting old (and also I am kinda picky when it comes to food, so maybe that’s reason).

but the food looks so yummy from the online pics!

i dont live there. but it’s REALLY close to campus.

Don’t live at the Castilian!
The pictures of food on the site are deceptive!
They serve chicken every day and definitely do not use the grill as often as they say.
Also, the cafeteria has strange hours and closes at 7 or 6 pm
The rooms are decent, but the security is not.
And for the prices they charge, it’s best just to look for actual appartments off campus and not dorm style places.

haha idk what to say. look up my old posts over Castilian,.it’ll give you a good idea of what you’re signing up for. Hate it too much to type it all over again.

The Castilian is great if you don’t mind the fact that any person from the street can walk into the building, take the elevator and come into your room if your door is unlocked.

=]

I’d also recommend living in an actual apartment. After eating cafeteria style food and having roommates for years it’s been remarkably liberating to be able to simply cook my own food at my leisure and have a nice quiet apartment to come back to after a day of study or work. It’s also cheaper than the exorbitant prices you get at some of the dorm-style accomidations in West Campus.

Then again, living in a dorm will inevitably lead to a lot more social interaction and will present more opportunities for fun. It’s a matter of preference, ultimately.

I signed a lease here at the Castilian and am SO GLAD that I did! I love being so close to campus (I can walk to class in less than ten minutes!) and I have a beautiful view of UT from my window. I moved to UT from out of state and didn’t know ANYBODY here, and I’ve made so many friends and feel very safe here. The staff at The Castilian is amazing and the place has a nice “home-like” feel to it. The cafeteria is AWESOME, they always have a lot of options for food and the desserts are incredible!! The rooms are pretty big – i mean it is a dorm room – but there is good closet space and big mirrored closet doors. The bathrooms are great – a maximum of four girls share one (or guys). I’d recommend living here to anybody that asked, it’s convenient, clean, and safe, and I’m definitely not leaving any time soon.

Ashley, by any chance do you know LonghornDude? ;)

You sound like you work in the marketing department for the Castilian - do you??

I’m from Sydney, Australia and I’m coming to UT later this year for the Fall semester.

I live at home and drive to university, so I’ve never lived in college accommodation/on-campus whatever, before.

Is the main difference between dorms and apartments that dorms are shared, but apartments are private?
I’m under the impression that it’s a bit more of a party scene in dorms, but I think that would probably be better for me since I’m only at UT for one semester and want to meet as many people as possible! Do apartments have social events, etc?

I read on Planet Longhorn that they recommend The Castilian - but I didn’t realise it was so unsafe?
Is there any accommodation that is popular with exchange students?? Because I’d also love to meet people from all over the world!

Since I’m also on exchange with McCombs doing business, is there a certain area of campus that may be closer to where business classes are held or where the main business buildings are? Or are they spread out all over campus…

Cheers!

There are definitely more parties at private dorms. On-campus dorms don’t really have parties, persay. There is one business building, and it is very close to Jester, Moore-Hill, Prather, Brackenridge, Roberts, and San Jacinto.

So it turns out that on-campus housing is 75% reserved to freshmen and they highly recommend incoming exchange students to NOT apply for on-campus…

Which leaves, off-campus dorms or apartments? Which ones are the best?

No, Unfortunately I do not know Longhorndude. why? Should I meet him? Does he live here at the Castilian too? I love meeting new people!! And no I don’t work for the Castilian I’m just a resident, but I would love to work for them if I had the time. I’m just to busy with school this semester I don’t havetime for a job.

AVOLIN- Definitely off campus dorm! The Castilian! I transferred from out of state and didn’t know anyone and living here I have made so many friends! The RAs and the residents are all so friendly and helpful!

Ashley, like you, Longhorndude signed up on CC and ALL of his posts were about the Castilian. It just seems curious.

Hey Avolin,
I’m from Melbourne, Australia, going to UTA for exchange in the fall semester
I just signed the lease forms for the Castilian, and so far everything has been smooth. The workers seem friendly via email, and they were very helpful. I’m a bit worried because everyone else has given bad reviews about the place though…

But if I hadn’t read all those posts, I would have thought the Castilian seems like a pretty good place to live!

Castillian is OK Its not the super top of the line coolest dorm. For one semester it will be fine. If meals are included, be careful of your class schedule. Welcome to Texas!

Thanks for that eaglemom10
Why do I need to be careful of my class schedule? I did choose unlimited meals because I thought it was easier, but I won’t be eating there every night.
