Cat and Christmas tree destruction

Any thoughts on getting a new kitten to stop mutilating our beautiful Christmas tree? We put up an old one to “redirect” him too. Yeah…that didn’t work. He likes the shiny one with pretty ornaments. We told the dog to guard it, but she just stares at me and rolls over and goes back to sleep. Below is a guilty picture of the incriminating evidence!

No suggestions. Both of our trees, the bottom branches are permanently bent from cats climbing them over the years. We just laugh and let them enjoy it. Eventually, they tend to get too old and heavy to climb, though one of our porky ones was in our big one the other day.

Here’s one of ours a few years ago.

You could spray ‘his’ tree with catnip, or sprinkle dried catnip on and around it (and put some lights and sparkly plastic ornaments on it). You could also spray a cat repellent/deterrent product on the new tree. These things may or may not work…the kitten is gonna do what he’s gonna do.

Sorry, no advice here but both your pictures are so adorable I’d just suggest hanging non- breakable ornaments on the lower half of the tree (as high as the kitten/cat is interested in climbing) and just consider the felines to be part of the decorating concept.
For some reason our two young cats have never been interested in climbing our tree although they like to nestle into the presents and shed on the tree skirt. Your cats are so cute peeking out behind ornaments and branches that I’m kind of jealous.

oh yes! Plenty of non-breakable, less important ornaments on the lower branches for them to bat around! And the tree skirt that can’t remain in place for 10 minutes even though I have it velcro’d, safety pinned, and weighted with a brick! It’s all fun for me (and them!) Part of the joy of Christmas. It’s one of the reasons I put up my trees this year, even though we won’t be home for Xmas week.

We got ALL non-breakable ornaments, because this little ninja climbs to the top. He just knocked the Star of David out of it’s assigned orbit.

I love it! He’s so cute! We have a black tuxedo cat as well - we currently have 4 cats - but she is our porker cat.

Wondering if we should get an organic tree next year. It seems harder to climb, right?

I think that’s a might fine cat toy! And you have gotten your 5 paw review. What’s the issue?

That’s a good idea. Feed him tacos until he can’t climb the tree…or watch the tree fall over every time he climbs it. Maybe that’s not such a good idea…

No advice, but I changed my avatar picture because of this thread to D and SIL’s kitty from a couple Christmas’s ago. They now have an 11 month old so we will see how it goes. We should bet who is going to destroy the tree first, kitty or baby. Kitty is 8 lbs, baby is 22 lb and could do more damage.

Well, babies can be trained…sort of. Cats, NOPE!

Stick with menorahs!

I want to send your picture as a Christmas card.
We have one who climbs and two who don’t. Always surprised at how little gets destroyed.

Hahaha! I guess there are real advantages to being Jewish

Absolutely!

It’s a darling photo, and would make a fun Christmas card - I’ve heard orange oil spritzed around the base will detract the cat - good luck.

Well…I’m back to say, baby goats in pajamas didn’t perk me up this year, but these kittens in holiday trees certainly made me smile. So thanks for that.

My son and daughter-in-law have a 16 month old (human) and put the tree in her play pen to keep her away from it. Their cat is very fat (looks like she swallowed a bowling ball) and can’t jump into the pen I don’t think.

They put the cat’s food and litter box in their spare room to keep baby out of both and put a cat door in the door. As the cat is so fat they got a bigger door. Can you guess who has already crawled through it
