cate and thacher both seem like a great schools and i really wanted to apply to both of them, but I deemed it pointless because i wouldn't be able to interview on their campuses (seemed like it was required). now i am really regretting not applying. do any of you know whether or not :

cate accepts late applicants ?

cate and thacher offer alumni or telephone interviews ?

that’s what i am hoping, i’m going to call on monday to check and see.

i literally just decided today that not applying was a huge mistake. i’ve been working all day on my essays and am planning on begging the teachers to complete the recommendations as soon as possible (i feel completely awful doing this to them). i’m going to try to have everything mailed by friday.

any information anyone has about these schools would be amazing.

Give Thacher Admissions a call. I don’t know if they admit applicants without a visit. I do know that they put a huge premium on the f2f interview. But many applicants need to come a great distance so perhaps there are occasional exceptions.

Also, especially with Thacher, it would be wise for you to see the School yourself. Its horse program and its emphasis on the outdoors are unique…not everybody’s cup of tea! However, if you’re a kid that likes the natural world as much as the classroom, it’s an amazing experience that cannot be equaled.

i was actually talking to some of my mom’s friends, they all know that i am applying but i have not discussed the decision in depth with most of them. one of them asked if i was applying to either cate or thacher, i replied that i had decided not to. it turns out that her best friends from college (she went to school in ca) had gone to these schools and that her friends were some of the most genuine and intelligent people she had ever met. she so firmly believes in the integrity and morals of these schools that she is thinking about sending her children to them once they are old enough (if they decide they want to board). this was completely random because i don’t exactly live close to california. i’m not saying that she was the one factor that made me want to apply. her friends may just have been special, but she definitely made me rethink things. i asked my mom what she thought and she told me that we would actually be in california in april (first i had heard of it) so if i wanted to i could visit the schools then (this was amazing because the whole reason i wasn’t applying is because i thought i wouldn’t be able to see either of the schools). unfortunately, april is way after the deadlines so i’m going to try to apply and hope for the best. i might have over exaggerated by calling it a huge mistake, but then again maybe not. maybe one of these schools is the school i’m meant to be at. i’m applying to schools on the east coast as well, and i have no family that is closer than at least a two hour flight (i am obviously fine with this or else i wouldn’t have applied), but having family living on the west coast may be a plus because it might be nice to see a friendly face every once in a while. thacher parent, the strong outdoors program is one of the things that has attracted me the most to both of these schools. most people here think it’s strange that some of my favorite activities are camping, hiking, and whitewater kayaking (crazy i know). i also used to own a horse and i love love love riding so the horse program is definitely a plus.
wow. that was long. hope i answered your question.

I know for a fact that Cate offers telephone interviews. I say go for it! Being a late applicant lowers your chances, but you could still give it a shot.

thanks for your help benley and bamagirl.
i just spoke with someone who used to work in ca and who knew each of the schools very well, she had only good things to say about them.
any more information about them or other opinions would be great.

cross- remember even though your mom’s friends said that her best friends from college had gone to these schools and that her friends were some of the most genuine and intelligent people she had ever met…this is most likely the result of attending boarding school (not that you have to attend BS to be intelligent etc… or just by attending a BS you will automatically be genuine and intelligent etc…–just that most BS aim to create independent thinkers who strive for personal excellence).

If Cate and Thatcher don’t work out, consider your first impulse. You can still have a wonderful experience–and still get to all the outdoor activities that you love, at other schools.

i know exactly where you’re coming from par. as i said before, these students may have been special. i would definitely not base my entire opinion off of those opinions (that would be incredibly foolish), because i’m sure these schools have graduates that do not have any of these qualities.
i am applying to six schools. if i am lucky enough to be accepted to any of them i will make sure to carefully weigh all of my options.
