I set up my schedule and registered for HIST 245gm Gender and Sexualities in American History with Professor Banner. I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this class and/or professor or on another Cat VI. It counts for the diversity requirement as well, which was something I wanted to take care of early.

I've heard that the class can be difficult at times, but the Writ 140 that goes with it is great. If anyone could tell me anything it would be greatly appreciated!

I had her class and I had to ditch it because it was so awful. If you want a solid GE VI, take REL 140g.

“How major Western religious orientations affect deliberation concerning issues such as reproductive technologies and abortion, physician-assisted death, civil disobedience, homosexuality, economic justice, and just war.”

The professor is legit and the topics discussed in REL are WAY more interesting and relevant to today’s world than gender studies back in the 1960s and 1970s (really now, who cares?)

You don’t need to know anything about religion for REL 140. 1/2 the class is spent on learning about the various religions and the other 1/2 is the application of those religions on modern ethical issues.

Good luck. Don’t make the same mistake I did by taking Banner ;)

moss, thank you for your input! I’m going to go change my schedule now. I had looked up old posts and saw that Banner wasn’t great to take that with but I just needed to confirm it myself. Thanks! You may have saved me from a horrible semester.

I just looked at the syllabus, and it seems that most of your grade is based on 2 papers… is it hard to get an A? I was never really a strong writer when it came to long papers…

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure my friend hated that class (Social Issues in Gender). It might’ve been a different, similar GE, so take this with a grain of salt, but if it’s the one he took, he said it boiled down to an hour and a half of male-bashing twice a week and wasn’t interesting enough to offer him anything useful. But he did get an A so it might be easy.

As a girl you might have better results than he did, but i wasn’t in the class so I wouldn’t know. I personally took GEOG-100gm, LA and the American Dream. At the time I hated it, because it was really boring, but I think in retrospect it was a good class that taught a lot about human nature, racism, and the history of LA.

For GEOG-100gm, honestly, I didn’t pay too much attention in class, so I got a B-, but it wasn’t unfairly graded or anything. If you pay attention then you should do fine. It comes down to two essays, a midterm, and a final, plus they generally give you full credit on the discussion section, which counts for like 20 or 30% of the grade.

I would recommend AMST 101 Gm- Race and Class in Los Angeles because I got a super easy A in that class last Fall with Sanchez (great professor). However, it seems that senate course guide says that this other professor “sucks”.

Another recommendation is SOCI 150 gm- Social Problems. Like AMST 101 gm though they keep on changing the professors every semester. One piece of advice is that you should go with a class with a good professor so you won’t make your life miserable and also learn something applicable. The professor is the one that really makes or breaks the class.

That being said. I would do this in your position. Go to the USC schedule of classes and see the General Ed Cat VI being offered. This is the link to that.

Some people may argue that the ratings are biased and should be taken with a grain of salt. That’s partially true, but the ratings do hold some value.

If all else fails, I heard from my RA that he took Changing Family Norms which was apparently easy overall and easy to write about in the corresponding Writing 140 class.

P.S. I rarely heard that Writing 140 was great lol. It really depends on the most part because you don’t know what graduate student-teacher you’ll get. I got this crazy Classics major who assigned one of the most difficult essay prompts in my entire life.

i thought writing 140 was great! but it does depend on your teacher. pretty much yance wyatt is the best one. plus i’m also a good writer and it was the only class that wasn’t a science. and i do much better at writing than science.

oh. i took contemporary moral and social issues with prof schroeder. my grade wasn’t that bad. but i had a few disagreements with my ta. you basically just learn about both sides of a social issue and philosophers who wrote on that issue. the tests were not that bad if you had all your notes and answered the study guide with a friend or two.
