Catholic feel at Fordham

What is the Catholic/Jesuit feel on campus? Do a lot of students go to mass on the weekend? Also do a lot of Jesuits teach classes?

My S went to Fordham not too long ago – he had friends of different religious as well as atheists/agnostics who were happy there. I don’t think a lot of students go to mass regularly – religious activities are available for those who were interested, but there is no pressure to participate. The Jesuits are educators first and foremost and do not force religion on anyone. There are not a ton of Jesuits teaching classes (I think my S had one Jesuit professor in four years).

That said, to be comfortable at a Jesuit university I think one should; 1) be respectful of religion; 2) have no issue with seeing some religious symbols on campus (ex. crucifix); and 3) look at the core curriculum and be fine with the idea of taking any required philosophy/theology courses.

This has been asked a million times. If you are Catholic/religious/whatever, you will find ample opportunities to foster your faith. If you are an atheist/whatever, you will be fine as well. I’ve never encountered a single problem as someone who is non-religious.

Visit the campus and see for yourself.

The Jesuit ideal of education is actually very cool.
