Ok again I’m consulting this forum for current info on CUA. Anyone auditioning there or has recently? This school keeps coming up and my D needs to make a decision as to whether to audition there or not. Any info would be appreciated! Got decide soon…
Haven’t auditioned there, but it’s seriously Catholic university. Takes its Catholicism seriously, I mean. It’s not A Catholic U of America. It’s THE Catholic U of America. Like, they wouldn’t allow Angels in America to be performed on campus. The students needed to move it elsewhere in DC. Also, the Gay-lesbian group (whatever it’s called there) on campus does not receive funding, as opposed to other interest and affinity groups. It’s a fine institution in terms of quality of education. Just be sure that you know what you’re getting into.
We’re catholic so I already know all that. Just wondering about MT
I would audition, it is a good program, they have a strong acting program. We have an accomplished actor friend who attended and so looked at. My impression was that it is an excellent school and you will get great training. I think it boils down to if you want to be in DC or not. I would audition and look at it if at all interesting to you child.
I auditioned for CUA on 12/3. The current students are extremely nice and friendly and made the visit welcoming. First was the dance call which mainly focused on ballet technique. Then we did jazz technique across the floor, but there wasn’t a dance routine taught, just showing your experience. There were also ballet moves we had to do by ourselves. And if you tap bring your tap shoes! In the audition I started with my songs and then performed only 1 monologue. At first the faculty was very nice but by the end of my audition it was noticeable they didn’t want me for their program. That’s the only negative Id have to say, they were welcoming when I walked in but practically ignored me for the rest of the audition. If you have any questions let me know! Hope this helped.
My D auditioned last year and it quickly went to the top of her list. Pluses: Loved her audition, DC location, strong connection with DC theatre scene (juniors and seniors are working), campus, friendliness, MT curriculum. Minuses: Non-MT Freshman requirements, and heavy focus on religious study; many additional requirements that one must “pass out of” in order to graduate (note that they tell you if you don’t come in with strong music background, might not graduate in 4 years…it is a BM degree), and though DC is quite progressive as are many other catholic universities, The Catholic University it not.
Thanks for the info on CUA. I think we are not adding it at this point. Thinking it will be too conservative and plus that info about the BM degree and not having a strong music background @mystifiedmtmom mentioned might be a problem. My D has one but not overtly strong and I can’t pay for 5 years at that price! Lol
Let me clarify that the Rome School of Music didn’t feel conservative and that was clearly where MT kids spend the most time. And, my D is not a strong traditional student so the extra academic requirements were real concern for her but might not be for a stronger student. Despite that, they offered her quite a nice scholarship. Best of luck on this journey. It’s quite a process.
