Caught between BC and IU

Yeah, so I’ve been accepted into the BC’s Carroll School of Management (Honors), and into IU’s Kelley School of Business (Honors/Direct Admit).

I won’t receive any financial aid from BC, so the price tag is 50k/yr. With IU, I’d pay out of state tuition, but with scholarships, the total cost would be around 22k/yr (and I’d start school with 30+ credit hours).

The thing is, I like BC’s campus, size and feel a lot more than IU…I don’t think I’d enjoy attending a school of 35 thousand kids. I do like IU’s curriculum, though.
My parents said they would pay for whatever school I choose, but still, 50k is a financial burden, and they would much rather prefer to pay IU’s tuition.

I don’t know…job opportunity-wise, which school would be better for a business major?

Also, I’m planning to go onto grad school, possibly pursuing a JD. Is undergrad school’s prestige a big issue when applying to a top law school? (Harvard law, for instance)

I’d just like to hear your opinions, as I’m pretty stuck right now.

Thanks, guys.

what is IU ?
Illinois ?
Indiana ?
Iowa ??

sorry, thought I'd mentioned that little detail :P

indiana

^ bump ...

BC is much better.

Even tho IU might seem ranked higher on the business ranking by US news.
But boston definitely has more opportunities when u get out.

Just personal opinion tho

I guess if we are using magazine ranking, BC is ranked 14 by Business Week while IU is 16 for undergraduate business, hardly a giant difference. I think the US News ranking could be for MBA and not undergraduate program (I could be mistaken).

Have you asked this question at the IU forum?

No, I'll ask, though.

The biggest question for me, I guess is whether BC is worth paying an extra 30k each year (prestigue-wise and recruitment-wise)...my parents are really pushing IU, so I'd need a strong argument to convince them otherwise.

are you gonna major in finance?

Cause finance is extremely strong at BC

No, I was looking more towards Internationational Business and/or Marketing.

I also wanted to do a dual major outside Carroll in chinese

The more I think about it, the more I believe you should take IU's offer. $30k a year is A LOT of money still. That's $120k in four years. That's the price of an elite MBA degree. Where the difference between the two schools are not great, then I can't justify going to one school over the other. Think of the long term benefits of saving money, which you will have to do a lot if you want to be a good businessman. You have to think long term, so let begin now. You can always transfer out if you totally hate IU after a year or two and you'd still be saving $30-60K. If your parents put the difference in a good mutual fund somewhere and let it grow, you might even have enough left-over for a car after your MBA.

Thanks
I think I will do IU.

Although I'm not fond of huge schools, hopefully I'll enjoy it and not feel a need to transfer :)

Definitely go to IU for the difference in money. Why would you want to pay 120k more for a school that is, at best, the 4th best school in its area?

What about BC (50k) vs. Rutgers (20k)?

Is BC worth 30k more per year than Rutgers

(for finance)

If your parents are pushing for IU, they're probably worried about the money. I'd say take IU. If you get the LSAT scores and a good GPA, you'll be fair game for law school admissions; get in debt for your JD, not your MBA.

Of course, if your family can afford it without worries, definitely take BC.

ETA: Lil_Wayne, I think it depends on whether you can afford the extra 30k. If you can, and you like BC's atmosphere etc, then the choice should be obvious. If you can't, again, the choice should be obvious.

Well what do you mean by afford?

It's $220,000 over 4 years at BC

My dad is willing to pay $120,000 of it

That means I will be $100,000 in debt

And that's not even including the interest that I will be paying

So is getting a finance degree at BC/CSOM worth me being $100k in debt by the time I graduate?

Where as I graduate from Rutgers with zero debt?

By "afford", I pretty much mean paying for everything upfront, no loans involved.

Do you plan on grad school? If so, I'd say take Rutgers and rack up the debt later rather than now. If you end up really hating it there, see if you can transfer elsewhere, but Rutgers is a fine school afaik.

This is all just my opinion though.

BC is 200k+ over 4 years

No family can pay the entire thing without loans

what's your point?

i think u should be realistic

You underestimate the wealth of some families in this country.

Edit: to clarify, I don't really want to talk about this, but I can afford $200k. It's obviously a dent in the wallet, but we don't need to take out a loan or anything. I also have some college friends that definitely cannot afford $200k, and every time when they've faced the question of money, they picked the cheaper option, and none of them have suffered for it.
