Caught cheating

So I was caught with my phone on my lap during my easiest final. I was caught cheating, the only problem is that I was not cheating.

This was my easiest class and I had enough points on my grade to be passing before I even started the exam. My professor saw my phone which was on my chair near my legs, because I had no backpack at the exam and I wasn't going to put the phone on my desk. He wouldn't let me turn in my final.

I was extremely ****ed but figured I would pass because of the points I had already received. I got my grades today, and sure enough, the teacher failed me. He must have changed my previous grades to ensure that I failed.

Is there any way that I can contest my grade? I have emailed the professor twice and he has not responded. Any suggestions on how I can get my grade in order? Taking this class over is not an option.

Also, I don't know if this matters, but he promised the class that if we did the last assignment, he would make sure we passed. I got 100 on this assignment. I wish this teacher would respond so I can talk to him!

He may not have changed any grades. It is definitely possible that cheating can be punished by immediate failure.

At my daughter’s school cheating in an exam would lead to automatically failing the class. Not only that but the F on the transcript would be a F!, what they call and F shreek, indicating the F was received for cheating.

You need to check your school’s academic honesty policies. At the 2 colleges I am familiar with they place a huge emphasis on Academic honesty and reiterate to students at the beginning of each semester in each class. Cell phones in exams are often explicitly mentioned as being a big no no. There is probably not much you can do as you were caught with your cell phone, and on your lap no less. It would be difficult to prove that you were not using it.

Check you school’s academic honesty policies for future reference so you do not make similar mistakes in the future. (FYI I recently took a test the State U I am transferring to requires before students can continue in advance accounting classes. All cell phones had to be handed in to the exam proctor.)

If he thinks you cheated on the final, why shouldn’t he think that you cheated your way through the rest of the course? Sorry, but I’m not thinking you’d have any success in contesting your grade.

IF your school doesn’t have an automatic fail policy, you should be able to file a grievance through the school (ie work with an ombudsman) to see if this can be changed.
