So I just took that practice PSAT CB sends out to Sophs/Jrs every year. And I was wondering what others got & general opinions? Here were my scores:

M: 80
CR: 64
W: 69

What really frustrates me is that in Section 1 (CR), I changed 3 answers in the last minute and my original answers were correct!! Ahh if I hadn't changed these 3, I would've had a 71 in CR. D: Does anyone else have this issue? Who here never rechecks or changes their answers once they've written it down?

Also, I thought everything here was easier compared to the actual 2007 PSAT. I did terrible on that one (178 combined) and it didn't help that that math section had a question dealing with logical statements. ><

eh same. I think it was kinda easy. I had M:80, CR:63, W:66. Idk whether they made it easy to get ppl excited or that we’ve actually gotten better at this LOL.

KeepRolling, and I praying that the actual PSAT was as straightforward as this one! But I just remember last year’s PSAT being soo hard. I mean, I look back at it now and I still think it was harder than this practice one CB gave.

hm i remember CR being really hard.. Math was hard cuz i didnt know geometry… writing idk.
Let’s just hope that this year’s is as even as the official practice test.

It did seem really easy, but I still didn’t reach my goal.

CR: 60
M:76
W:65

According to the list on the other post, I have to get at least 215 to be considered a semifinalist for my state. Do you guys have any suggestions to raise my psat score 15-20 points?

Math is usually the easiest to improve, but you’re pretty good there Just try to avoid stupid mistakes.

In CR, read the question, think of your own answer, THEN look at the choices. It can help a lot.

In W, pay attention to idioms!!! So many people miss them. Also pay attention to subject-verb agreement ( like number 27, where “have” should be “had”, because the subject is singular).

All in all, try to go over your answers again to check for stupid mistakes.

book_worm, you have an impressive score! Do you recall what you got on last year’s PSAT or the range of it? Just curious .. And I agree with your advice on Writing - I got an idiom question wrong, but I’ve been pretty good about trying to find idioms and whatnot and correcting them.

So is it too much to hope for that the real PSAT will be this easy?

^I bought a bunch of the PSATs 2005-2007 (wednesday and saturday versions) and did all of them. The practice PSAT that they give out is a recycled PSAT from 2005 or 2006 I believe. But I found that all of the PSATs were relatively the same in difficulty so you should expect something of the same on your upcoming PSAT.

I took the real 2005 PSAT (Saturday version) that my brother used a few days ago and got similar scores to the practice PSAT CB gave out this year. On that test I got:

M: 76
CR: 65
W: 80 (though I could sort of see my brother’s answer marks on 1/3 of them .. xx;; )

But I’m just worried because on this yr’s practice PSAT test, I could have gotten a 71 in CR whereas in the 2005 PSAT, I lost points because I got 5 questions wrong in vocab..

great! i need to learn some vocab asap! and work on writing. Writing is ridiculous.. it’s not THAT hard but if u miss like 5 questions.. ure already at a 660ish >_>

I’m going to be dead if this year’s PSAT is anything like last year’s .. they threw in a stupid logical statement question for Math, and I did terribly in CR & W for some reason. At least my last 2 tests have been somewhat decent..

I’m kind of surprised. I always thought writing was my strongest point and so i havent been prepping it nearly as rigorously as my other subjects… and i ended up not seeing a lot of things/ making careless mistakes… i guess i should start studying my writing more.

Yet, mind sharing any tips or techniques you use for CR and/or writing? I’m especially in need of vocab tips (like what to do when you can only eliminate one of the answer choices - do you look at roots or prefixes first? etc.) and any CR tips on reading passages.
