Hi all, I am currently attending my city’s community college to earn my associates degree before transferring to a university/college. It’s a really sweet deal because I’m getting these 2 years free. I want to end up getting a Bachelors in civil engineering, but the CC I’m going to doesn’t offer civil. It does, however, offer computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering programs. They also offer physics and math degrees. What should be my major while I’m here that will most prepare me for a civil engineering degree? Thanks
Mechanical Engineering is probably the best.
Mechanical is fine.
Look at the civil engineering transfer requirements for the school you plan to attend. They typically require that you complete 6 or 7 “critical tracking” courses, which include the Calculus series, elementary differential equations, the physics series and a chemistry class (and the labs that go with physics and chemistry). Make sure you complete or will have completed all of the course required to transfer into the civil engineering program.
Also, review the civil engineering curriculum. Some of the required classes may be available at the CC, and taking them now will save you the effort of having to take them once you transfer. Classes like AutoCAD, Statics, Thermodynamics, etc (which may be part of the standard ME curriculum at your CC).
