CC class transfer to HS

Thanks to hare-brained IB programme in our HS, DD2 may need to take Algebra II in a community college over the summer. She's taking Honors Geometry right now and much to my dismay loves it. She's done Kumon (like a good Tiger kid) pretty much thru Algebra II and had no major issues with it.

I'll call the HS Elders on Monday but would like to know how a CC to HS transfer of credit works (if at all). The CC class is one semester but the HS is one year. Is that feasible / possible? Material wise the CC Algebra II class and the HS Algebra II class cover about the same (the HS is a bit more calculator-heavy).

A similar stunt might be pulled with AP Computer Science, same reason, same question.

This is going to be entirely up to the people in your school district. They may already have compared the curricula for both courses.

Right, I’m just trolling for inputs as to how common it is for a HS to accept (or not accept) a 4 month CC class as the same as a 9 month HS class…

Our high school would not accept the class because it was taken over the summer. We do have a dual enrollment option through the state flagship and each semester in high school matches a semester class at the college so kids that take a full year will have 2 semesters of college credits in that course, however, the only classes that count for both high school and college credits are those taken during the school year. Any summer classes are NOT counted AND can affect your incoming college status at many colleges so check into doing that very carefully if you proceed.

The intent is to take Algebra II over the summer at the CC so that 10th grade math can be Pre-Calc-Trig and 11-12 to be IB Calc HL… Otherwise DD2 can only do IB SL Math (1 year).

The regular HS sequence is 9th grade Algebra I, the advanced is 9th grade Geometry, and that’s basically it because our Middle Schools do not offer Geometry. So there’s basically no way to take 2 years of Calc whether AP or IB…

Another kid stuck in the same situation is taking Geometry and Algebra II in parallel :). I’ll call the Elders on Monday to find out and let y’all know.

Does your DD need credit for Algebra 2, or does she just need to demonstrate that she’s ready for pre-calc? Those are two different things. If the math department will accept completion of the CC class with a certain grade as evidence that she’s ready for pre-calc then there really isn’t any need to try to get it on the transcript. Heck, if they are willing to give her a placement exam, she could probably even teach herself Algebra 2 over the summer with some online materials and YouTube videos.

My son took calc 1 after 10 th grade as a college class, and then took calc 2 as a junior. He didn’t get HS credit for calc 1, but they let him go into calc 2, which is what he wanted. Then he took another math class in college as a senior. Again, didn’t count for HS, but he got credit for the math classes, and did well on the calc ab ap test.

Our HS generally considers a CC course worth 3 semester units or more to be equivalent to a year of a HS course. There are students at the school who take Geometry at a CC over the summer so that they can advance into the STEM magnet program. The HS counts this CC semester class as equivalent to a year of HS geometry.
