Has anyone gone through the application process without having consulted with a counselor or the transfer center about major and IGETC requirements? I've been choosing classes based on the information on assist.org, but doing this on my own makes me feel like I'm missing out on something important. At the same time, I'm not sure going to see a counselor would make any difference.

Hi. I actually work in the Transfer Center @ my CCC and I always recommend that people see one of our counselors at least once. It really depends on your school though. The counselors that I work with are amazing and are very up to date with information about different schools, changes in requirements, etc. I have heard from a few people at OTHER CCCs that their TC counselors are horrible and have given them false information before.

I would still recommend seeing one. You never know what information you may be overlooking. However, if you follow IGETC to a T, complete ALL pre-reqs and communicate (via e-mail) with the department @ the school you want to transfer to, you can probably avoid the counseling office if you really have an adversion to it.

One more recommendation. If you are considering transferring to UCLA or Cal, make sure that you ask the TC staff if your school has a designated rep that comes out from those schools to meet with students. If so, definitely make an appointment with them. They can help you with an array of things and can even help you with your personal statement. Good luck.

assist is really all you need. counselors can give you a little added perspective, but, in my experience, they’re often pretty worthless.

get your IGETC and Major Prereqs out of the way… beyond that, take what interests you. my advice would be to map out your entire course schedule for the next two years and then run it by a few counselors / advisers.

also, whenever possible, take the honors version of whatever course you plan to take.
