CC during HS and then transfer in 1 yr?

Hey everyone.
I've been lurking around here for quite some time and I'd like to ask a few questions about transferring from a CC to a UC school in (technically) one year.

I was glad to hear about the option to transfer from a CC to a UC, since I slacked off and went through some personal problems during high school. Right now, im a senior in high school. The year has just began, but i know i wont be able to get accepted in to my top school choice, UC Berkeley, because of my weak GPA from 10th and 11th grade. Knowing this, I'd like to know if its an option to began CC right now, while im still a senior in highschool, and complete a few of my pre-reqs in my local community college's night school.

What im really asking is if it is a good move to take CC classes during Fall Semester/Spring Semester/Summer while im still
enrolled in HS, and then one full yr of CC. After all of this, do you think id be able to apply to UCB and fulfill my pre-reqs? or do i have to take CC for a solid 2 years AFTER i finish high school. I just want to now know so i can capitalize on the opportunity while i have it.

Thanks a lot, i really appreciate this forum and the helpful people on it.

Sure, you can do that. I know people from HS who started taking classes at our local CC since junior year.

I also know a few people who have transferred from CC after just 1 year. If you've got 60 units you are qualified as a transfer student.

All you have to do is make sure those units are transferrable to the UC of your choice.

Welcome to ASSIST is a great website to determine whether the course you take at CC is transferrable or not. Also, if you took any AP's and passed them with a 3 or higher they will give you credits, too. Check into your CC to see if they have an Honors Program, or any transfer programs such as TAP in order to alleviate your application.

Thanks for the speedy reply kissingurami.

I checked assist.org, and I’m going to be an Econ Major. I added the units that were given on assist.org and it adds up to something like 45. These are my pre-reqs right? So after I finish these how would I fulfill the remaining 15 units to reach 60? Would I take any classes I wanted till I reached 60 units?

And another question: Do ANY AP’s that I pass with over a 3 during highschool count as credits? Say I passsed the AP Literature Exam, something pretty irrelevant to Economics, would it count as credits in CC? And how much do these AP credits count as? Thanks again.

Certain UCs, I believe, also have major requirement courses. Say you are going to be an Econ major, you may have to take some Econ-related courses to fulfill your qualification as an Econ major transfer.
^However, I am not sure if you have to do this for a one year transfer student. If anyone can clarify, that'd be great.

Most APs passed with a 3 or higher would transfer in with some credits. As to how many your CC will give you for those, you will have to check specifically.

Top UCs such as Cal and LA will consider your ec's as well, so don't forget about them your senior year!

Talking to a CC counselor or perhaps a transfer center advisor would be more than helpful.

It's doable, but grades are the key. It may be better to take things slower, devote your time to earning top grades, because those are the key to entry to the more competitive schools. Rushing things, and sacrificing your GPA, would be a huge mistake.

i can attest to transferring in one year- i actually did it. i had a lot of AP credit from high school and started taking community college classes the summer before my senior year, then took some during senior year, and the summer after senior year. i had a super easy time during my full yearr in community college and got straight a's, saved a ton of money, and got in everywhere i applied in california. im now at ucla! if you have more questions, pm me!

Not necessarily. Did you also look at the school's GE path or the IGETC? I believe that you need to also finish a couple of GE classes in order to enter as a junior, right? Anyone?

you need to finish IGETC and the lower division requirements for your major as listed on assist.org

IGETC is basically the general education requirements for all UC's- usually your APs cover one or more of the requirements. also, try to take classes that cover both the IGETC and lower-division major requirements so that youre not taking anything you dont neccessarily need.

IGETC isnt required, it's only recommended. Alot of people get accepted without completing IGETC. But it's highly recommended that you finish IGETC because it gives you a +

I'm trying to do 1 year of cc then transfer to UCLA hopefully. I highly recommend you take like 2 major prereqs during your senior year semesters and during the summer after high school, cause then you wont have to take 19 units per semester (about 7 classes)... lol

and you save hella money.

this is a great idea, i also thought about this in high school, but never applied it - if not, start this coming summer, that 6-9 units helps

you will never regret not starting early, ap classes help too

depending on your major, you can definitely transfer in one year

what do you mean "you will never regret not starting early" don't you mean you will never regret starting early?

I just have another quick question regarding AP's counting as credits. How much would say, 5 or 6 AP's passed with a 3 or higher, help me in transferring out of CC in 1 year? Would it really give me that much a significant boost or is it something minor? I just want to know if its THAT important, because if it is, its definitely do-able for me to self-study some APs this yr; I just want to know if its worth the time and effort first.

Thanks everyone, this is actually helping me a LOT.

it depends on your CC. look at your cc's catalog and they usually have a conversation sheet. but on average, most of my AP's scores turned out to be 3 semester units. so 5 or 6 -> 15/60 done. but this is assuming that all of them are 3 units. my us history turned out to be 5, while some other were 2.

15 units is a significant head-start. That's 1/4 of your required 60 units. Man I wish I would have done that, haha.

In other words start ASAP.
I definitely REGRET not taking cc classes my senior year. I had the option of transferring in one year due to ap credits and summer units, but chose the two year path to avoid overloading and bad grades. If I had taken classes during my senior year, transferring in one year would have been much easier and ideal.

I was in a similar position my senior year, Fall 2007. I completely bombed my 9th-10th grades. I turned things around my 11th-12th, but still not enough for UC's to consider. I wanted/should have took units right away at my local CC. Oh well, at least I'm entering my first Fall 2008 of cc with 1/4 of the units.

Start NAO, if you know your going the transfer route.
