After scrolling through the "chance me" list of people having perfect everything yet still a high reach low reach to a certain school saying "OMG, i cannot get anywhere in life". Seriously? If this is true then I have no future of going anywhere, and my life spell doom. I came to the US and people constantly making fun of my accent, studying for all the tests and SAT, still cannot get through 1800, while all the members were like "I didn't study and have a perfect score". Well, I guess life isn't fair. I was not gifted with a brain.

Who share the same life with me, please make me feel better ;(

Maybe its their egos that have problems. They feel a sense of entitlement- that a good HS GPA and SAT scores mean that they should go to a “top” school which will automatically set them on the course to becoming successful. In reality, while going to a “top” school can help, and having a good GPA/SAT can help, does that make the other 99% of Americans who didn’t go to a “top” school/get 2300+ on SAT failures? Of course not.

Hard work usually produces the best result. How can someone be successful if all they like to do is sit on their couch and play video games (excluding being a pro gamer…). Academic “talent” merely means the ability to succeed in school. Not in life.

Keep working hard. If you feel what you are doing isn’t working, then try something else. Remember, there is no singular “right” way to do things. Each individual is different and requires different methods. I seem to understand that you are foreign? Perhaps the way you think is different. Perhaps you need a few more years of developing your English skills. Or perhaps, a 4 hour test really just doesn’t measure your academic potential.

In the end, CC does not accurately represent the population. It is composed of many insecure, yet academically talented, anonymous internet people. Not one of us can foresee precisely where we will be in 10 years. Just keep your head up, and ignore “chance” threads. Its really just a breeding ground for people to share to the world (anonymously) how great they are. Because really, what is the purpose of learning your “chances” for a certain school? College admissions don’t play strictly by the numbers, so no probability involved. It really is just one way to either reassure the insecure people or give them a confidence boost if they can overcome the “odds.”

The average CC-goer apparently has above a 4.0 and is within inches of a perfect test score. Don’t mind them. Most people on here who have lower stats don’t post them as much.

I estimate there are about 4000 currently active high school seniors on CC. Each year millions of students around the world apply to colleges in the US. Assuming that these 4000 represent, on average, the top 5% students around the world (based on SAT scores, ECs, GPA, etc., and my own biases), there are still sooooooo many unknowns. CC is, in every way, an academic powerhouse, a legion of students who compete with each other to enrich their own academic lives.

In other words, most CCers are just too fantastic to believe they’re human. Don’t let CC get you down ;)

hahaha i know right…There were even some people who aren’t satisfied with 2400 while i am still struggling through 1900 and 2000…I was like ***. Yeah,i guess they are gifted =] I am just happy being who i am and i hope you are,too ^^ and they make fun of your accent? That might really be hard times for you. Cheer up =]]]

My favorite satirical post on here was a person who wrote a chances post. He listed absolutely perfect scores on every test plus captain of 3 varsity sports and top winner at every prestigious national competition. He asked his chances to get into Georgetown.

One response was “What, only 3 sports?”

If you read the parents section of this website, you will see many posts involving students who are suffering depression, alcohol and drug abuse problems, lack of motivation, low scores, difficult finances, etc. The admissions portion of this website seems to attract the overachievers.

One other point - there are many students who get into very selective colleges who do not have well-balanced lives. These are many students with mental health problems, drug and alcohol problems, lack of social skills, etc.

In the end, success in life can be measured in many different ways, and sometimes the people with the highest scores do not have the skills to be successful in life. That includes being able to relate to many different types of people.

Oh dear!

Do not beat yourself up…Let me tell you a little secret…Many of the most successful and happy people in life did NOT have 4.0 GPAs and high test scores. Seriously.

OK…let’s help you get where you need to be… :)

Where are you applying?

What are your stats? 1800 SAT? What is your SAT breakdown?

*Hi, I just finish applying to all of my colleges. Do you think i can get in these schools: JMU, VCU, VT, and UVA (reach, so it doesn’t matter, probably cannot get in)

Asian/Male
GPA: W- 3.75/ UW- 3.53

I know my HS stat is not stellar, since i did screw up mu Sophomore and Junior year… sigh… but cannot change that fact now.

Ok…does this include your final list? Are you only applying instate?

Which schools are your financial safety schools (the schools that you know that you’ll get admitted to and you know FOR SURE that all costs are covered.)??

Honestly, I would say there are a TON of liers on this site. Like an insane amount. Yes there are a great deal of insanely smart people out there but they’re not all on this website. Heck one of my friends was mad about his 29 ACT and posted that he got a 36 and was worried because his score consisted of 36 36 36 35. People tore him apart.

Hi
My break down SAT: Math: 710 (this i am set, impossible to get any higher)/ Reading : 530 (I think I got higher for my last SAT), Writing: 550 (definitely improved), so as you can see, i need one hella improve on my reading + writing

Ok, I got accepted to Wheaton College (no idea if you guys even heard of that school), because it’s private it cost too much.
I think I have good chance at VCU with prolly half of my tuition cover (i don’t know for sure though), but I think this is the cheapest school out of all of the other ones.
Match?: VT or JMU
Reach: UVA and William and Mary (I would die if UVA accept me, but hey, it might happen :))
I live in Virginia
I am going pre-med direction, but not really sure specifically yet (so i put undeclared on application)

Thank you guys, i didn’t thought of the lies people made up since this is the internet :fp

Avoid the chance threads like a plague. The chance threads are perfect evidence for the insecurity of overachievers on CC. The chance threads are pointless. Good luck!

Wait do people really lie about stats?
It honestly never occurred to me to lie. Why the hell would you do that? This site is anonymous, and you’re obviously not going to get accurate advice if you do.

…I hate people. And I hate myself for lovin’ you.

^yeahh you really should not think that everyone posting is being honest. people with low self esteems will make up things so that people will compliment them on their fake greatness. it is quite silly and a waste of time. please do not be downhearted because of low SAT scores or the like. if you work hard, good things will happen.
