How difficult is it to transfer from UC to UC? Also, is it possible to transfer after just one year?

I am debating about choosing UC Santa Cruz or Community College.

I have heard that transferring from CC is the easiest since they get priority, but I have also heard of a case where a student transferred to a UC after two years after attending a CC, and then had to stay at the UC for 3 years and have to graduate a year late. Does this happen often and why?

I really wanted to go to my dream school, UCSD so I want to know which path would help me transfer there the efficiently.

[California Postsecondary Education Commission – Transfer Pathways](http://www.cpec.ca.gov/OnLineData/TransferPathway.asp)

Transfering from a CC to UCSD in one year won’t happen. You’ll need 60 of the right units to be considered as an applicant.

Two year transfers vary greatly by which CC you attend. The link will take you to an amazing tool published by the state of CA that will show you transfer rates and much more (including graduation rates of freshmen and transfers)

Switching between UCs is done but isn’t as common as some suggest. According to the tool linked abovr, In 2010, 17 students transfered from UCSC to UCSD. I bet most were Jr transfers.

It is really difficult to go to a CC for 2 years, transfer to a UC and then graduate in 2 more years. There are many hurdles, distractions and conflicting agendas.

If you go to UCSC and really commit to the place - don’t view it as a stop over or you will be miserable.

Good luck

Thanks for all the advice!

I am just conflicted over two things which are hindering me from making a decision.

1) Going to CC, getting to transfer assuming I keep up with the schoolwork, but then having to graduate in 5 years since I wasn’t able to get the courses I need.
2) Choosing what seems like a little the safer route(since I would still graduate in 4 years if transferring doesn’t work out) and just going to UCSC, but then not getting the chance to transfer in two years.

IMHO Dreamschool is an over rated concept. You are pining for an idealized vision of what it’s like. As cold as it sounds, you didn’t get in and have other attractive options. Move on and make the most of the opportunities you have. College is a means to an end, not an end itself. After you graduate, you can move where ever you want.

Furthermore, even if you do really well at a CC, you still might not make it into UCSD. They had 17k+ transfer applicants and accepted only 7600 last year. I am sure they were all well qualified.

Go to UCSC and make the most of every moment you have there.
