CC overrode my dependent student status; now Cal State campus won't do the same. Help!

Hi

I need some help I used to attend a community college in which they overwrite my dependency in order for me to qualify for fafsa the thing is that now I am transferring to a cal state and they advise me that my special circumstance is not valid for them to overwrite my dependency so they advice me that I need to provide my parents financial information.
And that is the problem my parents are not US citizens and they live in another country and just one of them work.

How likely is it for me to continue receiving financial aid once I input my parent’s information?

None of those factors qualifies you to be an independent student for FAFSA.

It depends on what their information (and yours) is.

Well this is why I’m scared off
My income here in the US is about 9k a year
and my mom live in a country in Latin America were she earns 350 a month so almost 3k a year and my dad earns about the same
So it would be a household of 3 with a total income of 15k aprox
Do you think I will still be able to receive financial aid?

Are your parents married?

How old are you?

Your parent don’t make much. Go ahead and provide the information the CSU needs to process your FAFSA. It’s unlikely you can file online, so just follow the instructions they provide. You are not the first student at a CSU to have parents living in another country.

Madison my parents are not married
my mon divorced her ex husband
and my dad has always been single
and i am 20 years old

Thanks for the advice twoinanddone because I am really nervous I would not be able to receive financial aid.

Do you ever live with either parent? If not, you’d use the information for the parent that supplies the most support to you

If you didnt live with either parent, which parent pays for more of your expenses (food, clothes, health insurance, etc) than the other?

i did lived with them is just that they had to go back because of their immigration status so now i live by my own and i self support my self they don’t help me from over there
i actually help them financially so i don’t know what to do?

For the previous 12 months from today, which parent lived with you more days out of 365?

None of them I’ve been on my own for 3 years now

Who did you live with last? That is the parent you will use if you need to use a parent.

I lived with both

Do your parents live together?
If no, which parent did you spend the most time with the last time that you lived with them

Before you were on your own three years ago, who was the last parent that you lived with? And don’t say “both” unless you, your always single dad, and your mom who divorced your step-father all lived together in one location.

@emma1995 most good schools offer a full ride as long as your family income is less than $60k.I’m very sure you would receive full financial aid if you declare exactly what your family earns.
Another thing to consider is that some schools provide a way for you to become independant by signing something. Indicating that you are changing state residencies. Keep in mind very few schools do this and I remember seeing only two of the ones I looked at for my son. Becoming a resident of the state of that school may drop your cost even more.

@reformedman

The schools that offer a full ride to ALL accepted students are amongst the MOST competitive for applicants. Most accept less than 10% of applicants. And some of those schools do NOT accept transfer students at all (e.g. Princeton).

This student is transferring from a community college to a Cal State.

This is not true.

The overwhelming majority of FAFSA only schools do not even meet 100% demonstrated need (this includes a lot of good schools). Even schools that do have generous financial aid policies where students would essentially pay nothing (even that is not true because they have a student contribution from summer earnings) also require either the CSS profile or their own financial aid forms. Even then, they are amongst the most competitive when it comes to admissions.

No, there is no way to become independent by simply signing something or changing your state residency. For all intents and dependent students are residents in the state(s) where their parent(s) reside.

Please provide a list @reformedman and define “good schools”.
