I agree completely the money is an issue to keep in mind. I think 7 tops.

I have decided to apply to around 13 schools +/- 2. I need financial aid, so this is probably the reason for doing so.

I’m applying to 12, as I see it right now. However, 6 of those are UC’s.

I answered 7 in the poll.

1 reach

I might take one of my safeties off.

Sorry I’m a fairly new newbie. What’s a UC? Undergraduate College?

I must add that because of monetary circumstances, there was a big divide between the schools I applied to. It was either schools that met need 100 percent or a school in the state where I am (safety). Pretty much all schools that meet need 100 percent are pretty difficult to get into.

Applications will be very high this year due to the recession as several students and their families are very concerned about financial aid. I will admit that I am applying to over 20 colleges (I am applying through QuestBridge and have a fee waiver) since it is extremely important to me that I can attend college at as little cost as possible. Each student has his or her own unique circumstances so really it is not exactly “ridiculous” to send off a high volume of applications if the student is willing to put in the work and his or her future is contingent upon a generous financial aid offer.

Also, I am wondering if anyone can answer this question. On application supplements, the college or university often asks to what other colleges are you planning to apply to in addition to our institution. Is it wise to admit that he or she is applying to 10, 15, or 20+ other schools? I would think it would make a bad impression if the college learned that they were likely sitting in 20th place on a student’s list and that, to the admission’s committee, the college was nothing more than a safety school.

I’m applying to so many because for the UCs I can just check off little boxes for the ones I want to apply to (Cal, UCLA, Irvine, San Diego & Santa Barbara). And then I have 1 CSU match (Cal Poly SLO) and 2 CSU safeties (SDSU, CSULB).

That’s 8 but in this case not at all excessive, IMO. I only have to write one essay.

Actually, the direction of the skew is the tail, not the peak, so the data, as you observe it is skewed left. That said, I’m not seeing a strong skew, probably mostly due to pancaking and a small pool (the fact that the respondents self select doesn’t help), and I’m not in the mood for formal tests of skewness.

Also, I can’t imagine the legwork that would go into applying to 15 schools. Essays notwithstanding (which should be easy if you really show your true nature in the essays) filling out all the name, address, activities details would be a lot of work. Even commonapp supplements have a fair amount of these exercises.

Looks like I’m pretty normal with 10 schools.

To whoever was asking it on page 2, UC means University of California (such as Berkeley, UCLA, etc).

But WHY do you like all 12 to 14 schools? Because they are prestigious reaches, or because they are fit schools? If you’re applying to all eight Ivies, you either haven’t done your research or you just want to go to a prestigious school. If you’re applying to 12 to 14 schools, I highly doubt that you really know what school fits you. Eight reaches?

14 schools
$60 each (say average) = $840
$9.50 for SAT scores = $133
$16 for the CSS/PROFILE (I’m assuming 2 are public) = $192
$9 one time CSS/PROFILE fee = $9
TOTAL = $1174

I think it’s a bad idea financially and a stupid idea in terms of college fit.

I applied to 14 schools. And it was the best thing I ever did. I got into Cornell which was about 10k/yr cheaper than the next school I was going to go to. Sure I applied to some schools I probably wouldn’t have gone to in the end (unless the money was fantastic) but I think taking that chance that saved me 10k/yr and getting into the perfect school for me was well worth that 1k$ down payment.

And whoever said that you should only apply to 3-5 schools if your SAT is 2400 or less than 2000 is a moron. Kids with 2400’s get rejected from Harvard and kids with 2000’s get in. That’s a ridiculous idea to limit the number of schools you apply to based on what your SAT score is.

For those throwing around words like “reckless” and “moron” for those of us who will be applying to 14+ schools, why do you care so much? It’s not your money. There is no correct answer, only presumptuous people who find comfort in believing that they somehow know what’s best for themselves and everyone else.

William & Mary - (Applying ED)

UVA - ?

Virginia Tech, James Madison Uni, George Mason Uni - Match

VCU, ODU - Safety

Cornell, JHU, - Reach

I agree with ZFanatic, just because your SAT score isn’t above 2100, doesn’t mean you should only apply to just 3-5. That’s pretty ridiculous, you shouldn’t let your SAT’s limit you in any way, exspecially if you’re strong in other areas. Bascially, the man point is, apply to as many colleges you want, but understand that it WILL cost you money. Money that you may not want to spend. I’d say the 7-10 range is pretty good for applying to college though. Its not as limiting, but probably not extremely expensive.

I’d like to apply to about 12-15, for various reasons, mostly due to merit aid and a few reach schools. (But I’m just a Junior, so I didn’t vote and I’ve still got time to whittle it down)

One of my favorite schools, Alabama, has automatic scholarships, so I should have a decent idea of how much money I’ll get. Another one I’m looking at, South Carolina I don’t think is automatic, but they are apparently very generous with the money.

And I’ve got some money reaches like Michigan and Illinois, OOS for both and are bost supposedly very stingy to OOS aid/scholarships unless you have the 3.99/4.4 35 ACT, cured cancer, etc…
Kind of in a weird spot. Parents can afford a good portion of my college, but no way could they shell out 50k a year if I am lucky enough to get into a school like Notre Dame. Apparently our FAFSA is going to be 35kish+, according to these college planning people my parents saw last year. Maybe we can afford 25k, 30k tops, with some sacrifices. And I honestly don’t want to do that to them.

So I’ll apply to some schools that I feel I can get some decent merit $, because some of the big expensive privates may be out of the question, even with FA.

Hypothetically you could adjust to any of the 1000’s of colleges out there. That doesn’t mean that every college is a good fit for you. Someone who applies to all 8 Ivies is probably a prestige *****.

I suppose the fact that the 2400er has a 500% better chance than the 2000er is besides the point.

4 reaches

10 total

I might take off one reach though.
lol, 7 of my applications are not common app.
