CC student with high ambitions

I am currently a first year CC student (just completed one quarter) in California. I have a very bad G.P.A. from HS, however is doing very well in CC (4.0 G.P.A.) I am club officers in two different clubs (president & secretary). I started a group at my local church for youth.

I'll be straightforward with you guys. I messed up in high school and I realized what a big mistake I made. My G.P.A. from HS is 2.7. I am a very good student however just got lazy and didn't care in HS. Now I understand the importance of school and working really hard.

I am here for your suggestions and opinions on what I can do to transfer to a good college (looking at Stanford) and in the long run, attend medical school. I know I have to maintain a very strong G.P.A., but what else will strengthen my application if I want to transfer to the ivies or the top ten 25 from usnews rankings?

Here is a rundown on my stats:

H.S. G.P.A.--2.7
4 A.P. tests (Biology-3, Psychology-3, Chemistry-3, Statistics-3) -- A.P. Scholar
SAT I: 470 CR, 700 M, 580 W [Total: 1750]
SAT II: Biology-690 MathIIC-710
ACT: 23 (Composite Score)

College coursework (Honors Program):
1st Quarter-
English - A
Chemistry - A
History (Western Civilization) - A

2nd Quarter Plan-
English(2)
Honors Seminar on Poli Sci
Biology
Chemistry(2)

President/Founder of a club
Secretary of a Pre-Med Club

My CC has a agreement with UCLA if I maintain a 3.5 GPA via the Honors Program. Therefore, considering that I at least maintain a 3.5, I can refer to UCLA as a fall-back school. What schools should I look at to apply?

Thanks in advance!

When transferring, the sky's really the limit (some exceptions apply). If you can maintain a high GPA (3.5+), you're looking at UCLA and Cal. A superb GPA (3.8+) will get you into some privates (Cornell). A perfect GPA means even more top privates.

really cornell???

to op: Just keep up the good work and maintain that gpa. Aim high and if I were you, I would retake that ACT/SAT.

what CCC u go to?

Well, the SAT would have to be retaken for sure, but Cornell does accept transfers.

if the OP is interested in science, he/she would be applying to CALS, which has a very good transfer rate.

Your #1 priority: maintain a very high GPA.

Thanks so much for your responses.

AdamantineX : Yes, I also think I should re-take those tests. And I attend Foothill College...any reason why you asked?

brand_182: when you mean CALS...do you mean california universities? sorry for the stupid question, but im new to this "college" business.

A great thread everyone!!

UCLAri said: "A superb GPA (3.8+) will get you into some privates (Cornell). A perfect GPA means even more top privates."

This is a $25million statemnet!! Are you serious??? b/c my case is very close to sofa's. Here are details:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=280961

the replys gave me some hope but after few days on the forum and seeing more stats and ECs i was like: NO WAY!!! It is impossible for some one who hasn't planned for this since s/he was in the womb to be accepted!!

What hurts though is the thought that those top schools recieve to many of those perfect GPA apps. and many get rejected (b/c I hear when you get up to 3.8-3.9 it's more about 'hooks', extra-colliculars, creating a new energy source, saving earth from a comet, capturing BinLaden...etc)

I hope UCLAri overlooks my sad sarcasm and provides some advice.

Another Q UCLAri: You said "...the sky is the limit (some exceptions apply)."what would those exceptions be???

sofa: no, no reason why =D

One last thing: I start losing sleep over this stuff!!! I'm having day AND night dreams/mares about being accepted/rejected by this or that school (Believe it or not, I have those dreams in English with my N.A. accent. it's sooo weird.... and strange!)

I was wondering if a 3.7 is a solid GPA for Cal's Philosophy program?

with in mind taking over 15+ transferable units a semester with active involvement in student government, phi theta kappa, and a philosophy club.

CCstudent88,

Assuming in-state, assuming GPA is at a CCC: Match

melbusefi,

I'm not saying that anyone is a guaranteed admit to Cornell, but with the right GPA and SAT, it's definitely possible to transfer.

Exceptions to transfer are schools like Princeton which simply do not accept transfers.

Thank You.

Yes, it would be in-state.

In at Cal and UCLA for sure.

By CALS I mean the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell, which has a 50% transfer acceptance rate. Besides ILR, it is the easiest college at Cornell to transfer into.

wow nice. That gives me a lot of hope. However, I need to still focus in school and get the highest gpa possible.

thanks brand_182...I'll look more into that.

Does anyone have any suggestions for colleges that I would have no trouble getting in?

One caveat: You absolutely MUST bring up that SAT score for privates. The CR score would have to be at least 650+.

is it ok to take ACT instead of SAT for transfer?

I don't see why not. Unless some schools change the rules for transfers, which seems unlikely.

most colleges take both, my own rule is if you're gonna be on West Coast, take SAT, east coast, ACT.

USC is a school you can look at, and it's also very to transfer into.

Also, will you be completing 30 units by Spring? If so, you may try applying for Fall 07. At 30 units, they will not consider your high schools stats, and since you have a 4.0, you may have a shot. However, in your situation, I would refrain for another year, as you could both save money and increase your chances as you will have more coursework for the adcoms to look at.
