CC students - What's your take on getting an AA/AS before transferring?

What are the pro's and con's? For me, I took a few extra classes to get my AA because I want some sense of finality...like, I want to know my 2 years here meant something, you know? Also, when I write resumes, I can have a degree for each institution I was a part of (since AA ~= a minor). Please let me know what y'all think.

This has been asked before (by me and others). Please search the forum before posting.

g1a2b3e...you crack me up

Yeah, I'm getting an AA general science and they want me to graduate this June. I don't think I want to graduate but I'll take the degree haha.

ASSOC OF ARTS IN Liberal Arts and Science, General - JUN 2005

I checked all of your postings, and NONE of them addresses the issue in question. I'm not concerned about whether or not the name of my CC shows up on my diploma...If you had read my post more carefully, you would know. And if everyone was to search the forum before posting a new topic...we would not have the wealth of information available that can be readily viewed and discussed. Who has the time to go through PAGES and PAGES of archives? We're busy people.

Seriously, if you want to argue "relativity"...why not go yell @ those posting about Rachel Ray or 420? At least I'm on topic. Shish. I'm usually not very confrontational online, but I found your comment to be quite rude.

ok, instead of making pointless posts, and telling people to go search through hundreds of threads, why don't you just answer his question, instead of getting impatient, gabe..

lol. Someone returned to her/his old habit.

Marry me, ilovecalifornia :)

(I'm JK, but thanks for backing me up)

I definitely think getting your AA degree is good. If anything, once you are IGETC certified, all you have left to complete for the AA is a 1 unit PE class...so, why not? Plus, it will look good on your resume if you plan on getting a summer job before school starts back up.

But no, I will not be "walking at graduation" at OCC...I'll save that for UCLA :) (I hope :))

you don't need an extra PE class. If you finished IGETC or will finish it by this spring, you can petition for AA degree as option III. However; there is deadline for it (April 14 i think)

i don't think it really matters as its kind of a pat on the back...

all the jobs i've applied to just ask if you're attending a four year institution...

"extra PE class?" If doing option 3, you do need a minimum of 1 unit but no more than 3 unit PE class in order to get an AA degree after being IGETC certified. And yes, there is a deadline, I know at Orange Coast College, was sometime in February.

hobofromdowntown,

Well yes, but what if someone does not want to tell their summer job employer they are going to let's say, Berkeley, if the summer job is in Orange County? I think most employers would not want to hire someone who will be gone in a few months..just speculation.

Shut up bokchoi, the topic title states whats my take? and thats my take.

Whoa, trainwreck. I may as well jump in.

Regarding the AA: Do it if you can; that is, if it's not too much trouble. If you have all the classes and everything, it can't hurt.

Regarding "omg search first n00b!": What's the big deal? If you don't want to answer something again, then don't. I admire your effort, Gabe, but I think you're trying to make this forum something it isn't. Besides, things brought up a second or third time can and most likely will be discussed differently from the first time; things aren't as simple as Q and A around here, and that's part of what makes this place such a good resource.

tallkell, you are wrong about the PE class. Read the blue sheet "planning for A.A. degree option III" this is what it says exactly:
"Students who complete this option will satisfy the requirements for the A.A. degree and complete the IGETC..."

I don't know where did you bring this PE class requirment.

coll4me, your school may be different, but for Orange Coast Colllege you do need a PE class..here's the link..check out #7

http://www.orangecoastcollege.edu/academics/course_cat/Requirements.htm

tallkell, i go to Golden west college which is in the same district as occ.

The link you gave is for option I. There are two more options to get A.A. degree. If you do IGETC, you complete option III.

option 1 is for occ graduation .... option 3 is for uc transfer

option 1 talks about completing option 3 as part of it but you don't need to complete option 1 to transfer, just for the occ AA....option 3 is all that matters to transfer to UC

you guys are lucky, in my CC for an AA in a subject, you need 2 unites of PE, and a 3 unit communications course.

But our school also offers a AA in transfer studies. meaning once you complete IGETC and 60 unites or the CSU requirments and 60 units you get an AA too.
