CC sucks away all hope

Does anyone else just look through this site and suddenly feel like their dreams of attending a decent school is over?

I mean when I look through the chances thread and I see some of the people that have amazing stats, and than look and see that people think they have low chances at their schools I just think "I am so screwed". My test scores are not very good, and my EC's are kinda mediocre. The only thing I do have going for me is my GPA and rigorous courseload.... I feel like I'm going to get stuck here in Utah, and that would be one hell of a nightmare.

yep. i've been lurking on this site for awhile, and every time i check out the "chances" threads, my hope dwindles. stanford has been my ultimate dream since 7th grade, and now i am facing the reality that no matter how hard i try, i can never be sure it's enough to get me in. when i see threads about people with perfect 800s on SATs and tons of ecs and great awards, then other people reply "well, you have a slight chance of getting in, but you are going to have quite a competition," i feel hopeless. which is why i try to limit my time on this site, and instead of reading about what i have to do to get in, i try to actually do it. knowledge is useless unless you use it.

sometimes i feel like that, but its not like i ever planned on going to a college like harvard or yale
everyone here has amazing stats and im like nothing compared to them lol

"Does anyone else just look through this site and suddenly feel like their dreams of attending a decent school is over?"
-Yes. All the time.

no.

Think about how many people are on this site. These are merely a fraction of the people who will be applying to the same schools as you. And the fact is that not everyone will have those same stats.

And, it looks to me like you guys are putting too much stock in Chance threads. The members here (at least that I've seen) while they may have experience with it, are NOT members of adcoms. No one can say for sure whether or not you're going to get into the college of your choice. Don't lose hope!!

Don't worry. Worrying = your demise.

o thanks for the reality check

Yeah, same for me.

I should stop browsing the chance me threads. As someone said above, you see these perfect SATs and GPAs that you think should be a shoo-in at just about any school, then the replies are "Reach, maybe dream?"

lol yeah, that's exactly what I mean.

I also think part of it is that people look at it and get intimidated, so they think to themselves "I should tell them they don't have a chance so they won't apply and get in over me."

It's petty, but it's how people work.

Just don't aim too high and you should be fine. I mean, the BIGGEST mistake that my friends made was applying to schools WAY out of their league.

collegeboard.com is a good source for judging saftey schools as well as reaches. But also a few in the middle.

^^^

Interesting. I heard some guy who had a 98 average applied to all the top schools and no safeties. He got rejected from all of them.

That's when you get into his other stats though.

You have to remember that it's not just about grades anymore.

Well I don't know him or his other stats but my school is very competitive (Stuyvesant HS, NYC) and a 98 is probably valedictorian.

Valedictorian doesn't always cut it anymore though, like I said.

There was a girl at my school a couple years back who had like a 4.5 GPA and applied to UCLA and got rejected.

Yeah, but you have to realize what are your realistic chances.

I don't care if you're applying to x college or ivy league, if that college has acceptance rate of less than 25%, then NO ONE has a good chance. THE ONLY TIMES THEY HAVE A GOOD CHANCE IS WHEN THEY HAVE A MAJOR HOOK.

Do you get it?

If the acceptance rate is let's say HYP- ~10%, that means you're going to be competing with 10 other kids for one spot or in other words, one out of ten will get in.

Also, it's not always about competing; all the top colleges have tons of great applicants. They can reject someone just because they may not have room for them.

Right. But if you'll notice, none of that has to do with academics either. ^_^

So like I said.

People put way too much focus on SAT scores and such.

Like don't get me wrong. It's important and if you don't have good grades you're not going to get in.

But I just hate how people are like "OMG YOU ONLY GOT A 1670 ON YOUR SAT YOU WON'T GET IN ANYWHERE MORON."

yeah there's plenty of good schools where a 1670 will get you in.

What people should do is if they can't get higher than a certain score and you've taken it 3+ times, that's when it's time to throw in the towel and quit. You should just accept the fact that you can't get higher than a certain score and just accept the score.

I'm sticking with my 1670 :) I am, however, taking the October 27th ACT in the hopes that it'll be better than my SAT score (I got a 26 on my practice. :))

This is one thread I absolutely 100% agree with.

Yeah- chances threads mean nothing.
The first time I visited (for about a month or so), it completely stressed me out. Now I came back, registered, and am trying to make the best out of the good of the site. No stress anymore! (And I'm actually more hopeful... random).
