Hi, I'm a senior and going to a community college next year. I dont know why I didnt get into the UC's that I wanted because I have quite good stats. I wanted to ask a few questions about this journey to med school from CC.

I'm planning to do well at CC and get into UCLA or UCSD.

1) Would it be likely that my GPA will drop when I get there?

2) Community College GPA doesnt factor into your final GPA at a UC, so that means my GPA will be based on the harder upper division classes right?

3) Does Med school give disadvantages in terms of admissions to applicants who went to community college? I dont want to get stellar grades and find myself not getting into any of the good Med schools.

4) Would it be better to go to UC Riverside and do well there?

thanks for your help!

When you transfer to UCLA or UCSD, your GPA will start from scratch, so your community college gpa doesn't go into your final gpa at UCLA or UCSD.

Med school looks at your test scores and your college gpa. It doesn't matter if you went to UCR or Harvard, if you bomb the tests, you're not getting into a top Med School, Same with college GPA.

I say go to CC, what's the point in going to UCR if it's the easy way out in your case. Isn't it better to be challenged, and hopefully that challenge will pay off in your test scores. If you don't have the work ethic to get a high gpa at UCLA/UCSD, then you're probably not cut out for Top Med Schools.

I think you should ask on the premed forum and also do some other research. Its an interesting question because med schools care about your grades in important premed classes like o-chem, and you'll probably take these at the CC. So do they discount your grades in them? Dunno, but I'd say keep checking into it.
