CC to UC Transfer as an Engineer

Hi guys! I'm applying 2014 fall to transfer 2015 fall as a Computer Science. I'll probably end the fall with a 3.65 GPA, with 2 C's in physics but my pre-reqs all completed. My question is, which of the UC's would I be able to transfer to? I know that UCB and UCLA are out of the question, but would I be a candidate for UCSD? Thanks!

Talk to your CCC transfer advisor.

advice above is spot on. Also you probably qualify for the TAG program.

What is the trend of your grades? Is it downward in general? What are your grades in calc, as well as all your physics courses as well as CS? I’m just trying to see your grades in more of the core-related ones as opposed to overall.

It’s not downward in general - actually it’s just my physics grades that are bad. In fall quarter, I skipped ahead to second quarter calculus and ended up getting a B. After that, I got A’s. Also, in all of my programming classes I’ve been getting A’s. By the end of next spring, though, I will have finished all of chem, physics, and math! Hopefully completing all of those classes will help.
In addition to my major-required classes, I’ve been fulfilling IGETC even though I know it’s not required for most schools! In all of those classes as well, I have A’s.

The CS transfer to UC expert is @ucbalumnus‌ . He knows all the different various courses for all the various UC CS singular and double majors. I thought I saw bio classes required at SD, if that is one of your targets. If ucb doesn’t see this thread, maybe you can PM him.

And sounds like the transfer advising from your community college is pretty bad?

But to me, your science/core related grades look pretty good, even with the physics hiccups.

My cc’s counselors are definitely not the best. When I had laid out my plan to them they literally had no advice, they just said to take the classes I was planning on taking. This was one quarter ago, though, so I think I should check back.
That’s a relief! I took a look at the stats for ucla transfer admits by major, and for C.S., out of the 501 applicants, only 6 were admitted. I’m just hoping for davis/sb/sd/irvine!

The hard part about figuring out what UCs are realistic chances for you is that UC StatFinder is no longer available.

You could try applying widely to the UCs and seeing where you get admitted.

Note that even some CSUs can be fairly difficult to get into. For example, San Jose State required a 3.50 GPA for transfer applicants to the CS major for fall 2014 (but only a 2.80 GPA for the somewhat similar software engineering major). http://info.sjsu.edu/static/admission/impaction.html</a></p>

Would it be correct to assume that you have consulted http://www.assist.org to see what courses you need to take for each target school’s CS major?

I really wish I was just born a year earlier so I could have tagged with SD :(

This year I could say with certainty you would’ve had a very high chance at UCSD, but for this next application cycle CS is becoming impacted. The program is at its limit.

I think UCI and Davis are probably your best bet. A good chance at UCSB if you have prereqs done. Probably a better chance at Berkeley than UCLA because you aren’t admitted to the major.

Good luck.

I feel you still have a chance. Your gpa is still pretty high even with the physics hiccups. Your app will be stronger if you had a club or worked during this time at school. For prereqs, use assist if you are a CCC student.
