hi everyone
I was just wondering what are some things that could make someone very likely to transfer, specifically someone in cc. Please give helpful answers. If there’s anyone out there who has done this please let me know what you’ve done.
Start by reading what Yale says about transfer admissions
https://admissions.yale.edu/transfer
Keep in mind that Yale gets about 1200 transfer applications for about 20-24 spots each year making the odds much lower than the already low odds for first year applicants.
As to “things that could make someone very likely” to successfully be admitted as a transfer? Winning a Nobel Prize, having one of your parents suddenly become the ruler of a decent sized country or winning a huge lottery and making a substantial donation would all be big boosts. Other than that, I can’t think of anything that would make admissions “very likely.” It’s a very distant chance for all transfer applicants.
Things that I can do to increase my chances
Outstanding grades in advanced classes.
Laudatory recommendations.
If applying for sophomore standing, outstanding standardized test scores.
Research and notable achievements in your intended field.
A compelling reason or reasons why Yale is the only place you can achieve your goals.
Lol, it is hard enough to transfer to Yale from a top 20 school with all As. Pretty much impossible from a CC.
Yale’s website says they take cc transfers, so the chances aren’t zero. But you have to read their website to understand what it is they look for in an applicant.
Do you have match and safety schools lined up? Reach schools are good, but you need a complete list.
They may take CC transfers, but probably at most one a year. A 4.0 at a CC won’t get you into Yale, and may not get you into any top 50 college.
@GGmnoP5 - Are you a first generation student or an underrepresented minority student? Do you have a compelling biography that explains what a significant achievement it is for you to attend a CC? Are your professors encouraging you to apply to Yale, specifically?
Make a strong case about what you have to offer Yale, and why attending Yale will help you become the student and person you aspire to be. Be specific about courses offered in departments where you will pursue majors. And specific about athletic, extracurricular, club, activities you want to pursue at Yale. Write in an extremely engaging way, and perhaps, taken together with an outstanding academic record, stellar letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors and/or employers, you will impress the AOs that you are someone who belongs at Yale. Best of luck!
Per the common data set Yale accepted 24 transfer students from 1.361 applications (1.7%) in 2018-19. There is little you can do (short of curing cancer or something equally spectacular) that will make such a transfer “likely.”
Do the best you can, get involved on campus etc. and create a transfer application list that includes a range of colleges.
Our local community college (Sacramento City College) has had a Yale transfer each of the past 4 years (they state this in their marketing materials). California CC students are considered to be very focused on their particular major and having a good general education background. Additionally, one of my co-worker’s daughters was accepted as a cc transfer to Yale (he started bringing a bag lunch every day after the acceptance arrived).
So I think Yale is very progressive in their desire to help the underserved communities and is giving preference to cc transfers.
