Hello,
I have two sons. One is a junior in high school and another is a sophmore at a CC. My son at a CC is in an odd situation and I was wondering whether that odd situation causes him to be at an disadvantage or not when he applies to med school. He is a sophmore at a CC and will transfer to the public university flagship this spring. He will transfer with an A.S so he will "skip" first two years and enter as a junior. He has taken classes at the CC in calc, bio 1 and 2, chem 1 and 2, physics 1 and 2 (non calc), english 1 2 3, and other sociology and stuff electives. He wants to go to medical school. But the problem is that med school requires 1 year of bio, chem, calc, english, etc which he has mostly already compelleted. He has a 3.9 currently. When he transfers he plans to major in Molecular Biology or similar. Will his current situation cause him to look bad in the eyes of med school admissions because he took alot of his premed classes at a CC. What will happen when he goes to junior year at the Univ? If he continues science classes there like anatomy, genetics, etc and does well on those will that help his situation. He is fine with attending the public uni for an extra year (3 years there total) to get a specific major in public health or somethign. Please give us some feedback. I hope that choosig a CC wont turn out to be a horrible choice for my son. Thank You very much!!

OK, bad news first. There is a minority of medical schools (like VA Tech) will NOT accept CC credits to fulfill pre-reqs. He (or you) will need to contact your state med schools (Dean of Admissions) and ask what their policies towards CC credits are. (That information is probably in the MSAR also, but I don’t have access to check right now.) He might also ask the health professions advisor when he gets to the state flagship. The advisors there should be familiar with the requirements of the state med schools and any other school students there commonly apply to.

Most med schools do not have an issue with CC credits so long as those grades are reinforced by good grades earned at a 4 year college.

I would think, however, since he’s continuing with science at the state flagship that he will be able to use those credits to fulfill his 1 year bio, 2 years chem requirements even for places like VA Tech. Again, this is a school-specific issue and the only ones who can answer this are the administrators at your state med schools.

I am not too too familiar with CC Premed transfers. Like I said earlier, he is planning on continuing to take heavy science courses at the University after transferring. Will he be allowed to stay at the University for 3-4 years after transferring? He wants to work on a double major and he wants more time to prepare for MCATs and have ECs, etc. Would this be possible and will this have a disadvantage in terms of it hurting his chances at med school? He would most like complete all the “requirements” for med school at the University also because he will have taken the years of bio, chem, etc but in the higher classes.

If he needs financial aid, then that may run out after 2 years.

Med schools do NOT like it when kids take longer to get thru school. He should just do his two years at the University, take his upper division courses, and apply to med schools after he graduates.

Forget the double major, med schools don’t care about that. Just finish the degree with the best GPA.

CC transfers should take a glide year and apply then.
