I’m a community college student in California applying to universities for fall 2021, and I was wondering if I should apply to USC for computer science/biz admin. So I was originally an CS major but i’ve realized I don’t like coding at all. After doing a ton of research I’ve been looking into USC’s CSBA major and it really looks like the right major for me.
So my question is, how hard is it to transfer from community college to USC for this major? And what was the gpa like? Also what should my alternate major be aswell?
Apparently, you also posted a similar thread in the business major forum.
First of all can you afford the 75 to 80K per year costs at USC with tuition itself at almost 60K per year? Secondly, the average GPA for USC transfers is 3.7+. The higher your GPA, the better your chances of getting in. Lastly USC Marshall is very competitive to get in (USC computer science is also very competitive). Additionally, there is a wealth of information in the USC transfer postings in this forum, including some of the stats of students admitted.
The CSBA major is within Viterbi and is one of the most competitive to get in because of it’s popularity. It is not a double major, though it’s name makes it sound like it is. There are very few spots for tranfers in this major, so GPA will be important. And remember, you are actually applying to Viterbi, so you are competiting with that level. The kids I know that started in it as freshman ended up moving into straight up engineering major as it was too CS “lite” for them. Certainly a small sample and was def the more engineering types that did that than the business types, but that does seem to be a popular move. But it sounds like you see the major as a great fit for what you are seeking, so if you can afford it as @UCBUSCalum mentioned, I would definitely apply.
CS is strong at USC and business is too, so it is def a nice balance of the two. Some feel specialization is key while others like the well rounded balance of CSBA. That is up to you.
@CADREAMIN thanks. I searched the Marshall website and did not see much of a match…mostly data science type. In the old days, business schools would have the related major call management science or quantitative/production management. In the the engineering schools, it is industrial engineering.
