So, I've been trying to research this for the last two days. I'm in my first semester of college at a local community college. I would like to transfer at junior status so I'm guessing that means taking a certain amount of credits. First, do I need to receive my associates degree in order to transfer? Seems to be no, and if that is true what classes do I need to take. I would like to transfer to UIUC into the computer science program. The CS dept. lists their prereq's here: Transferring | Computer Science

Also, should I try to take courses that are equivalents of what current students at UIUC are taking plus those prereq's? I think that's all I wanted to ask right now. Thanks!

Associates degree is not needed (it is not an issue at all). You do need to meet course requirements for major into which you will transfer and you will find those on-line at UIUC's site. Many also have recommended minimum GPAs. And, yes, otherwise taking equivalents of what students take at UIUC is highly recommended (particularly getting some of the gen ed requirements). In fact you need 60 hours of transferable course hours and transferable courses are only those that are equivalent to courses at UIUC. It is highly recommended (and failure to have them will be a factor counted against you) that you have first course in rhetoric (writing) and have completed the UIUC foreign language requirements (for CS in engineering that would be either 3 years in high school of the same language or complete the third semester level in college in a language)

Just some things for your info -- web pages that provide some info:

The overall engineering transfer requirements (note the 3.0 GPA minimum simply gets you considered and to actually get admitted you should assume you will need higher -- it varies from year to year but accepted CS transfers are often in the 3.5 and above range):

The description of requirements to graduate with CS engineering degree which gives a suggested sequence of taking courses that should aid in what you may try to complete before transfering:

There are also engineering college gen ed requirements as set out on the following page, but be aware that meeting the campus gen ed requirements will also result in meeting the engineering college gen ed requirements:

Sorry to bump an old post. I've been noticing a lot of posts from transfers that includes their high school GPA and test scores. Is that considered for transfer admissions? I thought it was only when you had less than the 60 credit hours.

If transfering as a junior with 60 hours, your high school record and test scores are essentially irrelvant. Test score won't be used and you need to submit high school transcript mainly to verify you graduated from high school.

I know a woman whose son was accepted as a transfer student into CS. They took 11 transfer students the year he was accepted. He was a star student at the CC he attended.
