Hey all, I'm looking forward to joining the slug life next year (did my TAG!), but I'm having a conflict over my major. I originally planned on transferring to Santa Cruz as a Sociology major and as far I'm concerned I still am, but I've taken a real shine to Economics this semester... there's just one issue:

When I first started my CC career, I took Econ 1 and failed it due to personal and professional issues I'd rather not discuss. I finally did an Academic Renewal* for that class and I am taking both Econ 1 & 2 this semester. However, I noticed that the Economics major for UCSC states, "If courses [Econ] 1 and [Econ] 2 are repeated, the department will only consider the grades from the first attempt in determining whether students qualify for admittance into the major."

So here is my question: Will the fail I received on my first attempt at Econ 1, regardless of the Academic Renewal* at my CC, be counted by Santa Cruz and thus disqualify me? I'm entered into an Honors contract for both my Econ courses this semester so could I make an appeal, some kind of case, to the Economics Department if I am disqualified? Or is this hopeless?

I'd really REALLY hate myself if I ruined my chance at entering a great program that is more appealing to me now than my current major because I was a stupid 18 year old. Any responses or advice from UCSC students that were in similar situations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton for any responses.

*Grade is not counted towards my GPA, but stays on record.
