CC Transfer - Wondering about the Economics major.

Hey all, I'm looking forward to joining the slug life next year (did my TAG!), but I'm having a conflict over my major. I originally planned on transferring to Santa Cruz as a Sociology major and as far I'm concerned I still am, but I've taken a real shine to Economics this semester... there's just one issue:

When I first started my CC career, I took Econ 1 and failed it due to personal and professional issues I'd rather not discuss. I finally did an Academic Renewal* for that class and I am taking both Econ 1 & 2 this semester. However, I noticed that the Economics major for UCSC states, "If courses [Econ] 1 and [Econ] 2 are repeated, the department will only consider the grades from the first attempt in determining whether students qualify for admittance into the major."

So here is my question: Will the fail I received on my first attempt at Econ 1, regardless of the Academic Renewal* at my CC, be counted by Santa Cruz and thus disqualify me? I'm entered into an Honors contract for both my Econ courses this semester so could I make an appeal, some kind of case, to the Economics Department if I am disqualified? Or is this hopeless?

I'd really REALLY hate myself if I ruined my chance at entering a great program that is more appealing to me now than my current major because I was a stupid 18 year old. Any responses or advice from UCSC students that were in similar situations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton for any responses.

*Grade is not counted towards my GPA, but stays on record.

At the fall department orientation, the speakers said that it is very uncommon for students to successfully appeal the gpa requirement for the major. That being said, however, they did mention that the combined majors do not have any requirement for acceptance. I know that this directly contradicts the info in the catalogue, but they said it was sort of a secret way in.

I would recommend contacting the econ department and finding out for sure.

Also, noticing that you started out planning to be a sociology major, be sure to take all the required math before transferring. If you don’t have calc I-III completed, you’ll be blocked from the core upper division econ courses.

Definitely contact the Econ department in regards to that because it is tough to say and I’m an Econ major myself.

You’re still applying as Sociology right? I’d advise sticking with Sociology and once you’re in switching into Econ
