Hi,

I am currently attending community college(CUNY) and I want to transfer to a better school as soon as possible. Here are my questions:

I would like to aim for good schools like Columbia or NYU and was wondering if they accept transfers after only 1 semester/year in community college( assuming I get great grades in college, didn't do too well in high school)?

And even if I do get accepted, would financial aid pay for the tuition fees (how does financial aid work)?

If I choose to transfer after 2 years of community college to (NYU, Columbia or SUNYs), would I need to start all over from my junior year? Wouldn't that be a total waste of time?

What do I need to do to make sure that I don't need to start all over from junior year when I transfer( to which ever school I choose)?

What are the difference between transferring after 1 semester/year and transferring after 2 years?

Thank you all so much. :)

1.) I’m not sure, just go on their website and in the search bar on their website type in transfers.

2.) Chances are financial aid isn’t gonna cover all of the tuition and fees but at least half of it. Your best bet is to go on the actual website to learn more about it, or to look on the financial aid part of the forum to learn more.

3.) What do you mean start over.? As in start from 0 credits.? No.

4.) When you meet an advisor to schedule for your classes, bring along the recommended course sequence for whatever school you’re going to and take those course equivalencies.

5.) If you transfer after two years, the major differences are that you would obviously be saving a ton of money (if you were to attend Columbia or NYU.) Your first two years at a four year university, you’re pretty much taking introductory courses and/or gen ed electives and they can be taken at community colleges for much less. So if I were you, I would just go to community college for two years. But if you’re really eager to start at a four year school, then go for at least one full year.

1) 1 semester, no, one year, yes. You’ll want the year, minimum, if you did badly in high school (see #5).

2) Columbia is need-blind, and will cover all assessed need (provided you complete FAFSA or somesuch by a certain date). NYU costs a LOT, and gives terrible aid to freshmen, and worse aid to transfers. Expect to pay a lot out of pocket, or get lots of loans.

3) You’re a junior transfer, so you continue on as a junior once you get to your transfer school. The only “starting-over” is if you need to make up some courses not offered at your CC.

4) What WallyxD said.

5) In addition to what WallyxD said, they also weight your high school grades and test scores less and less heavily the later you transfer, so since you did poorly in high school, it’s better to wait and show that you have improved more than just temporarily. 1 year probably won’t cut it.

Also, your GPA starts fresh when you transfer, if you didn’t know that already.

^^^ Not entirely, as it’s fresh for that school, but if you apply to grad schools, they’ll look at all of your transcripts and see all of your grades.

Thanks alot for replying, it really helped alot, I really appreciate : D

What I meant when I said ” starting over” is I have to study another 4 years at my transfer school after 2 years at cc and why wouldnt that be a waste of time? I just dont want to spend 6 years for my bachelor degree.

Thank you all so much. ^^

It’s 4 years total (of course, barring program changes or missing prereqs) – they call it a “junior transfer” for a reason. :p

Good luck! :)

Thank you so much! :-)
