CC-UC transfer

Hi! I'm new here, and would really like your guys' help with some questions I have

Well I'm currently going to a community college here and hope to transfer to a uc or calstate in about 2-3 years, and my dream school is ucla and i'm also planning on majoring in film. I know that those 2 things together are ridiculously competitive, but I'm determined. I just wanna know if maybe I tried transferring into LA as an English major, which is part of their TAP program, would it then be possible to switch then to film? Or would that be a bad idea?

and secondly, I just want to know if maybe volunteer and community service is valued more than a job? or is it the other way around? and what would be a good place to volunteer for film majors? my friends all volunteer at hospitals because they're all medical majors, so would maybe a volunteer place like habitat for humanity be not seen as well since it's pretty irrelevant to film?

thanks ^_^

In general if you really want to transfer to UCLA you must: Get the highest GPA possible for you in cc. A 4.0-3.8 is best. Finish all the GE requirements and all lower division requirements for your major that are available at your cc. Do NOT plan on getting into UCLA as an english or other major and switching to Film. It is highly competitive, only allowing a handful of transfers a year. So they are not going to take someone who appears to change their major once at UCLA. Look at the Dept. website thoroughly. See what they expect of majors and then go beyond that. They probably will ask for a portfolio of sorts. Probably some film making type experience is key. Like you have been making you own films since you were 10 and had some entered in festivals, etc.

Seriously, UCLA is very competitive. Why not shoot for UCLA Film but have a couple other UCs or Cal State schools as back ups. Don’t do TAP as it will not work for Film. Talk to your cc counselor right away and tell them UCLA Film is your dream and have them help you work towards that goal starting now. Then be sure to have them help you pick 2-3 back up film schools that you would be happy with. The main thing is to start your prep now so you have time to finish all the pre reqs. that your cc has. Good Luck!

Yeah, I’m plannin on doing all the things you listed, thanks for the advice!
