I found a few threads already similar to this one, but needed to have some specific questions answered regarding major requirements. I'm not sure what kind of details I should write down, but hopefully this is enough to evaluate my chances:

This is my second year at a CCC and I'm getting ready to apply to UCLA and Berkeley and my transfer GPA is currently 3.78 as of Summer 2005.

The Econ major at both schools are Calc 1, Calc 2, Micro and **Macro Economics/b. It took me a while to decide on this major, so that's why I won't be able to take Calc 1 and Macro Econ until Spring 2006 and Calc 2 until Summer 2006 (For the IGETC, I only need to finish Fall semester and a Geology class in Spring). I know this is going to hurt my chances of getting into either schools a lot, but I figure I'd try any way (and if worst comes to worse, I'll stay at my CCC for another year).

I haven't participated in the Honors program or any other agreements offered between UCs and CCCs. I don't have any ECs either except for 2 part-time jobs. I work as a tutor for an autistic child (middle school, ~10 hours/week) and a customer service rep. at a performing arts theatre (~12-18 hours/week).

Also, I'm not sure of my chances at any other schools (including out-of-state), so I have no idea where I should apply lest I don't get into either school in the title.

-if i were you i wouldnt stay at CC for another year. seriously. dont spend 3 yrs at community college just so you can transfer into a higher ranked school than what was originally offered to you.

econ at UCLA is impacted. and dont just set your primary major to econ and alternate major to something else, because if UCLA rejects you for your primary major you are rejected period. (btw this policy is unique to UCLA)

Well, the reason I set my hopes on UCLA and Berkeley is that I'm trying to get into the best school I can possibly get in to where I can imagine myself not hating my life attending there. And this isn't to say I'm not open to going to an out-of-state school or other good universities within California, I just don't know much about any other universities.

And if it takes me a year longer to get into the school I want to go to, isn't a year "wasted" better than spending many more years at a school I don't truly wish to attend? I guess there's many other reasons besides this, but this pretty much sums most of it up.

You and I are almost identical, excpet for a few things. First of all, I agree with the person who said not to stay at the CC for three years, it will only make you miserable and leave you wishing you had applied early. Why not take the shot and just apply? I also agree that econ is impacted, but my advice is just apply under the major you want to, and don't complicate things by using and alternate major blah blah blah. The reason is that the school of your choice WILL examine what recs you've got done for your major, so have as many as those done as you can. With your GPA, you're definitely a competitive applicant, but the higher you get it the better. I believe the Econ av. GPA is a 3.7-3.8...but it's always good to err on the side of caution. In regard to your EC's, you might want to get more involved on campus. UCLA Likes transfer students that were part of clubs and activities at their CCC's. :-)

Oh, and try to get as many agreements as possible. Good luck!
