CCC to UCSD for Computer Science... chances? tag?

I currently have a GPA of 3.3, which will hopefully go up after the Fall quarter. By the end of spring quarter, I would have completed IGETC and all the pre-reqs listed on assist.org(except for a assembly language course and half of the physics series).

Can someone tell me what chances I have of being excepted into UCSD as a Computer Science major?

Is it true that CS majors are no longer impacted at UCSD? I read this on the forums here and a couple friends that go to UCSD has confirmed it. However on the website, it still lists CS as a impacted major.

Can I sign a TAG agreement even though CS is still listed on the website as a impacted major?

Do they look at your high school GPA (Mine was below 2.0. Yay for 2nd chances!)?

The physics series is important to finish for a computer science major and I'm not sure what CCC you are at.

About the TAG: Undergraduate Admissions, Policies and Procedures

That may answer your questions just look at the TAG section

No they do not look at high school GPA

I am pretty sure it is no longer impacted or it is in the process of being taken off the impacted list.

I know that the Physics series is pretty important, but I do not know what the minimum requirements are for it. Could anyone elaborate?

IGETC is irrelivent if your trying to transfer into the engineering school at a UC I think.

physics is REQUIRED so zero chance unless you finish it

--from assist.org *Effective Fall 2006, these courses, or their equivalents, will be the minimum
required preparation for all engineering transfer students.

- Calculus I-for Science and Engineering (Math. 20A)

- Calculus II-for Science and Engineering (Math. 20B)

- Calculus and Analytic Geometry (Math. 20C)

- Differential Equations (Math. 20D)

- Linear Algebra (Math. 20F)

- Complete calculus-based physics series with lab experience

(Physics 2A-B-C)

- Chemistry 6A (except computer science and computer engineering

majors)

Note: Effective Fall 2007, a total of ten quarter-units of general

chemistry equivalent to UCSD's Chem 6 courses (including laboratory)

will be required for students applying to all majors offered by the

I know of a couple people who have transferred to UCSD as a CS major without completing the Physics requirement. I'm thinking they have changed this requirement since the major is no longer impacted.

I would have completed Physics 4A and possibly 4B by the time of transfer...

Anyways, I'll try to sign a TAG agreement and see where that goes.

Thanks for all the help! If anyone has anything else to add please feel free too.

UCSD CSE: UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering - Transfer Student Admissions

It still list those as the requirements, I would gamble on it, I would at least call them and ask to make sure. Also, there is a major called mathematics/computer science B.A. and it does not require physics. This major is not under the UCSD CSE department and the major is math and programming based so the pre-reqs are math courses and programming courses.

As for the TAG, you would need to complete all of the pre-reqs. That is what a TAG is for. People who have TAG must complete all of the pre-reqs. In a way its worth it cause you know you'll get in.

Impacted majors list at UCSD: Current Students: Impacted Majors

Computer science isn't impacted for transfers.

Therefore, there are two Computer Science majors at UCSD. One in the CSE department and one in the mathematics department.

I'll be sure to put both BS/BA on my application.
Regardless, I'll also give the school a call to make sure and talk to some counselors about transferring.

Thanks everyone for all the help!

Edit:
If I list the math/CS as my alternate major and get accepted into that, how easy would it be to change my major to CS?

There are procedures outlined about how you can switch into the computer science major in the CSE department at UCSD.

Math-CS is easier to do compared to CS in CSE. If you contact them, you should contact the CSE department since they handle part of the admissions process. Also, its possible to get admitted into UCSD and not in the computer science major in CSE.

CSE switching major process: UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering - Exceptional Admissions Program
CSE contact: UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering - Contact Information

Turns out that CS is indeed no longer a impacted major. Any student from any major can transfer into the CS major if they wish.

That's good news... just hope that this isn't a sign that the CS program there is degrading somehow.

sorry buddy you're not looking at the transfers section though check THIS page UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering - Transfer Student Admissions

you need acceptance to the engineering school before you can declare a cs major as well as your acceptance to ucsd

First Step: Transfer students must apply directly to the UC San Diego Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools and be admitted.
Second Step: Transfer students admitted to UC San Diego will have a second evaluation of their course work by the Admissions Office in the Jacobs School of Engineering and the CSE Department. This second evaluation is a performance review of physics, math and computer science transfer courses and is in accordance with admission requirements for all Departments in the Jacobs School of Engineering.

and you do need to finish those physics I doubt you had friends that got in w/out them as it says MUST COMPLETE

admission Requirements for a CSE major
Starting Fall 2006, transfer students must complete the following nine courses with an overall GPA of 3.4 and must have a 3.2 cumulative GPA:
Math 20A - Calculus I - for Science
Math 20B - Calculus II - for Science
Math 20C - Calculus and Analytic Geometry
Math 20D - Differential Equations
Math 20F - Linear Algebra
Physics 2A - Mechanics
Physics 2B - Electricity and Magnetism
Physics 2B - Fuilds, Waves Thermodynamics and Optics

whoswithwhatnow: I posted that link a couple post ago, read above.

t33kkk asked how you would transfer to different majors ONCE you are at UCSD

Also do note theres a mathematics based computer science major that does not require the physics series. As I said above maybe his friends got into a different major in a different department. One is in the Mathematics department and the other is the CSE department. Its totally different.

Impacted means if there are limited slots to get into the major. If you are applying to an impacted major, it doesn't mean you'll get into the major if you are admitted. Also, TAG isn't possible with impacted majors. Once the major is no longer impacted, its easier to get into the major, given you have completed the requirements. Also, TAG is now possible. Therefore, they might require the courses to be completed but if you complete the required courses then you a definitely in the major. If it was impacted then you may or may not get into the major even if you complete all of the required courses. Thats the difference.

i was responding more to the statement "any student from any major can transfer into the CS major if they wish."

Thats a half true statment, since mathematics CS is a CS major.

CSE is like a special department for computer science and enginneering at UCSD, kind of like Haas at Cal.
