@UCLAFFF I totally understand your concerns and they are valid. I am concerned too! I definitely didn’t plan on working 40 hours during university. At my old job I was working 6am-2:30pm M-F, which meant I could take afternoon and evening classes. Since moving, though, I am now working a retail job where my hours are more flexible. Right now I often work until 12:30am and have my first class at 9am. It’s not ideal, but I’m making it work. I rarely, rarely miss class unless I am actually too sick to come in. I think I’ve only missed a handful of days since returning to school.
I am qualified for FAFSA, but they based my income off of what I made last year before moving (which was significantly more than what I make now). I’m waiting to hear back about scholarships and FA packages, if I am accepted. If I am accepted and given even somewhat generous aid, I will cut down my work hours as much as I can while still being able to pay bills. I 100% want my grades to be my priority and, seeing as my fiancé went through this same process before (though at UW and working ~30 hours/week), he’s given me quite a bit of insight.
I will figure out a way to make it work and to make it work well, as I want to be invested and UCLA truly feels like the right fit for me, I’m just trying to figure out the logistics of how people make it work for them. I’ll be 28 in the fall and I really want to get a career started as soon as possible. Basically, I want to have my cake and eat it too! I don’t want a ton of debt, but I would take it on if needed.
