Okay so I know most of the people on this board are usually in the 3.5+ gpa range but that's not the case for me. My current GPA is 2.7 (it was 2.3 at one point). I am pretty much done with the units required to transfer and I was set on attending a CSU until I recentely visited a UC campus for a few days (UCD). Now I REALLY want to attend a UC.

The problem is that none of the UC's are really offering winter 2007 transfers for my major, political science. This could be a good thing as it will give me a chance to raise my gpa to at a slightly respectable gpa (3.1ish).

My top UC choices would be UCD, UCSB, UCSD, or UCI (in that order). What do you guys think I should do? I know with even a 3.1 gpa it would be a reach for most of the schools listed but those are the only ones I really want to attend.

Also, please don't make any post about how my GPA is so low for a person goign to a CCC, I KNOW it is low already.

You can't be crafty and take some of the classes you earned really poor grades in over? Would that help your GPA? The person posting this had to take a certain math class three whole time, so I am not judging you at all. Maybe you could take two super easy classes to raise your GPA, like study skills 101?

Maybe you should add on to your list of schools to be on the safe side. You guys in California do not always know how lucky you are with schools. I live in Tennessee and we have to go to private Universities in order to learn what you guys get in on learning about at public Universities. Why do you not desire to attend Cal State or something?

hi! I spoke with a transfer admissions counselor from UCSB sometime around the spring and he told me that if you have around a 2.8-3.0 you should not be discouraged from applying. UCSB is a bit more competitive than UCR or UCI, so perhaps you should apply to all 3 schools just incase! it doesnt hurt...! hope that helps!

PS. call admissions and ask; give them your name and info, so when they read your application, they know you are interested!

The thing is I didn't get many F's or D's (actually I only did that once, and I've since already re-took that course). I mainly got C's and B's and you can't retake those grades.

The reason I don't want to go to a Cal State is because I don't like the enviorment The only CSU I would attend is one that is local (SJSU) and I don't want to stay at home. But at the same time I think it would be illlogical for me to waste my parent's money to go to a CSU away from home.

EDIT: I do plan on applying to all of those school and if worst comes to worst I'll have to attend a SJSU. I kinda answered my own questions but I dunno..

And about units, I will have about 90units completed so far. I read that UC's don't even look at applicants who have over a certain amount of units, I think it was 120? So that leaves me with around 30 units for the Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters.

Ya, I made this name awhile ago when I was applying out of HS. I made a miscalcuation and I only have 73 Units completed and 82 after this summer, so I wouldn't be able to apply even If I wanted to. I guess that's a good thing as it gives me more room to work with to raise my GPA.

Your life is NOT over. Just for the record - I was accepted into UCLA as a Poli Sci major, and I had an extremely low GPA...a 2.67 at the time that I applied. However, I have had some very unusual circumstances in my life so my personal statement was very good and convincing...my college career was an uphill climb when it comes to grades. Still, I don't like it when people say that you have absolutely NO chance at getting into a UC with that sort of a GPA (it's what my counselor had told me and had I listened to her, I would have screwed up big time!). I would say...take as many easy classes as you can to raise that GPA...make sure you finish all of your GE requirements (follow the IGETC if you can)...do ALL Of your major prep courses for Poli Sci, if possible...and just get that GPA as high as possible. And then when it comes time to apply, write an AMAZING personal statement...include any and ALL extracurricular activities/work you had...and just see where you go from there. I got in the first time, without even having to appeal. Hope that gives you some optimisim...

SJSU is an outstanding university particularly for undergrads and hardly is a bad choice for you. would monterey bay or SFSU be too far?

remember there are 23 CSU campuses and some are truly unique. don't assume what you saw in one place applies elsewhere. each campus is semiautonomous and there are some exemplary programs at many of them.

on the other hand if you love the UC system take a peek at merced. new campus, lower standards, not as far from home. you might like what you see.

Thank for all your responses, I decided I'm just try to work really hard this upcoming school year to raise my GPA. I decided that I am going to apply to: UC..Davis, Irvine, SB, SD, LA, Berkeley. I know my GPA would be a longshot to some/many of those but I think it's worth a try looking at some of the people who have been accepted with similar stats. I will also be applying to SJSU if I manage to somehow get rejected from all those UC's. : )

UCSB and UCD and UCSD and maybe UCI both have agreements with various community colleges that gurantee admission upon completion of x courses wtih a 2.8 gpa. I suggest you look into that becasue you may have guranteed admission to UCD alreayd.

are you kidding me? you can pull a lousy 2.8 at a juco and guarantee an admit letter to UCSD which says no thanks to high school grads with 3.7s and lots of APs and activities?

please cite some evidence. this seems incredible, and as a professor in the system i find this news appalling in light of the reputation of this campus. being unable to pull at 3.0 at a juco says very little about your academic ability and would thus put you up against super brilliant people.

OK, i know UCSD for a fact has this agreement with the community colleges in the San DIego area and some outside of san diego. I signed this agreement and had guranteed admission ... my gpa was higher though, but here is a copy from what it says on my colleges website.

And just to note, people that go to the UCs are not super brilliant and you cant say that everyone who can not obtain a 3.0 at a JC is an idiot that is set to fail at the UC level.

You do not know the circumstances that cause many people to not obtain those perfect grades. A lot of people have families, jobs and other responsibilities that many students who dont go to a JC do not have, granted a lot of students at a JC are slackers, but a lot of students at the UCs are slackers too. You can not tell me that every sutdent you have had obtained an A or B in your class.....

Your very judgemental and i am offended to know that your a professor in the system and that this is your view of JC students.

yea he doesn't sound like a professor at all. he sounds more like a stuck up kid who is trying to validate the rigor of his school by putting other kids down. i doubt he is a professor at one of the UCs. also you'd figure that a professor teaching at one of the UCs would already know about this agreement.

and drj the fact that youre a professor is a bit embarrassing for the UC system, since you've shown your limited understanding of how the california community college system works.

Youre probably not even a real professor bc if you are, I would assume a college professor would have better things to do with his time than smash on the GPAs of CC students.....either way professor or student, you obviously need to get a hobby.

like its the professors job to care/know about the community college system. Listen people, professors are there for RESEARCH. Teaching / advising comes second.
