CCI laptop

So there are the three types of CCI laptops. Which one should I get? How are these laptops? Is it worth getting one or should I just stick to mac.

Firstly, I was awarded a grant for the ThinkPad T410, but I upgraded to the X201. This is how my parent and I looked at it, I have my own Gateway laptop already, and I am very fond of it. However, it’s kinda big, and I don’t want to lug it around campus, bumping it into things and ruining it. So, we decided to upgrade to the X201 because it’s smaller and more lightweight. That way, I can carry around to classes as need be, and if I faceplant while walking and destroy it, the insurance will get me a new one right away. My Gateway can just stay in my room so I can play Sims or watch DVDs on it in my free time since the X201 doesn’t have a disk drive.

I talked to a few students about laptops while I was visiting, and they all said getting the loner when theirs broke was very quick. I’d rather have a laptop that doesn’t brake too easily, but I understand carrying it around increases the risk. I figured that my personal laptop can serve as an additional back-up for notes and presentations throughout the year just in case something horrible happens to the X201.

So there ya go. I think it’s worth getting one for the insurance. I don’t know if the cost would be an issue since I did get a grant, but I have a friend who didn’t get the grant, and she’s doing the same thing for the same reasons. As for which laptop to get, I think that’s up to your needs and if you think you’ll have to carry it around, etc.

Sorry this was really long, and maybe I just sound really dumb, but that’s how I look at it. :)

Thanks. Money is not the issue. I just don’t know which, out of the three, would be the best. That is a good point that the 201 is the smallest, because I do plan on bringing it with me to classes. What do you think about the tablet? I am not really a PC person in general, so I have no idea about any of these models.

Um. I have never used anything with a tablet, so I just kind of ignored it. When I went to visit, the guy talking about laptops said it wouldn’t break as easy as you’d think, but I never really considered it. I didn’t really see the appeal for me at least.

What is everyone doing? Just bringing a laptop from home or getting a CCI laptop? If you get a CCI, which one and why?

I’m bringing my Macbook. :)

im buying a macbook pro

i’m getting a macbook pro :)

Is there any Apple support on campus if something happens to a MacBook? (I am considering getting one)

there is an apple technician on the bottom level of the student stores. and if you buy the laptop from them you get the three year apple care plan bundled with it at a discount

Hmm. Cost is a factor for me, and the T410 (1.4k) has nearly the same config as the Dell Studio 17 (0.9k). The Dell has a 3 year warranty though, while the Thinkpad has a 4 year one. And, of course, I won’t get photoshop but I have a copy of that anyway.

I’m rather confused about this too.

Edit: I love Dell, so no Dell-bashing. =(

With the CCI computers you can get a replacement while your computer is being fixed, but with the dell you would likely have to have it shipped off to be repaired and be without a computer while you were waiting. Also the 14" T410 would be a lot more convenient to carry around than the 17" Studio 17.

Advice from a rising senior who has seen it ALL when it comes to CCI laptops:

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT NOT NOT get the CCI laptops if it’s not fo’ free (with a grant). The only thing they have for them is convenience - if there is a problem you can instantly get it fixed and/or get a replacement. And sure, convenience is huge, but not at the sake of getting terrible computers that easily break (screen cracks easily), are slow and just generally get messed up easily as far as interface/freezing/etc goes. I don’t know a single person that doesn’t refer to their CCI laptop as “that piece of sh-t!” Don’t do it. GET THE MACBOOK - worth it, doesn’t get viruses or freeze up as easily, better interface, etc.

How compatible are macbooks with the rest of the university? Are there any majors that should not get a laptop?

Chipmoney, I can’t afford a T410. I’ll have to go for one of the cheaper ones. And I’m a comp engineering major, so I’m not sure bout what kind of software I’ll have to run. I don’t know whether its safer to go with a Studio 17 (even if, as you say, its harder to carry round), because I certainly won’t be able to afford to a T410 later.

annn: CCI laptops are that bad? =S

Okay. So I get a free thinkpad with my scholarship, BUT i have been using macs all my life. I am going to get a macbook pro.

tarheel151 - how can I get in touch with the Apple technician on the bottome level of the Student Stores to get more info (like pricing, apple care protection, etc.) ? Thanks for your help!

CCI laptops are not that bad - yes, they’re big and ugly, but they’re compatible with most everything on campus. You are only going to run into major issues if you do crazy shiz with your computer in the first place (I have no idea how you would crack the screen, but there you go). I got the middle-sized one (computer-challenged, so I don’t know how else to describe it, HA) and a docking station, and it has been fine. If anything happens to it (and something will, eventually) it is easy to get a loner computer and the CCI people on campus will fix it for you. Like magic!

Yes, macbooks are lovely, but you can run into major problems with them when you have to download tons of crap for chem labs or physics labs. A friend of mine had her macbook taken over by a virus at one point during the semester, and then you basically have to live with NO computer. Just live with the CCI for undergrad and then you can spring for a mac as a graduation present. Or something along those lines.

I am a future international student coming to study in the fall. I have a really inexpensive 10 inch asus eeee pc 1000H. I really don’t want to fork out money to buy a new laptop, is there any chance this laptop will suffice?
