Hey. Im a senior in high school this year and started filling out my applications I play the cello, and have heard some great things about the string faculty at CCPA, but I can’t seem to find anything on their website besides for students going into BFA. So if anyone can answer my questions I’d love it.
What's the typical musical performance schedule like for cello/strings?
What's it like to live in heart of Chicago?
Is there a good performance/music ed program for strings?
@cellomom6 should have some insight, as her S was accepted there (although decided to go somewhere else in the end). You might also want to consider DePaul – great cello faculty, beautiful campus in Lincoln Park very close to the center of Chicago, all the advantages of a big city but still with a small campus feeling. PM me for more information if you are interested, as my D has just begun her BMus degree there in cello performance.
@OakieHigh - Tanya Carey is a fantastic teacher and students from all to audition for her studio. You’d better like mornings though, because she’s known for holding studio class bright and early! The schedule at CCPA is pretty much like any other music school, and you’re encouraged to attend performances at other venues in the city, so the school supplies you with public transit passes each year, which are included in your tuition.
Living in Chicago is amazing for a young musician! There is so much to do and you’ve got the Chicago Symphony and the Lyric Opera as well as many, many other groups that are based there and others that are passing through. A big plus for CCPA is their dorm in the Wabash building, which is just in it’s 3rd year and has drop-dead gorgeous views of Lake Michigan or off in the direction of the Museum Campus & Soldier Field (which also have lake views). It’s an all-suite arrangement, with A/C, laundry room, dining center and a full gym. The bookstore is on the ground floor and the classes for the music students are in the adjacent building, but you don’t have to go outside to get there (great in the wintertime!). The entire facility, both on the Wabash side and the Michigan Avenue entrance has 24/7 security and no one gets in without a photo ID and being issued a timed pass, and that includes parents going to recitals!
You can PM me for more information if you’d like and I can answer more questions and try to put you in touch with a current student there if that would help. Good luck as you start your journey!!
I went to Roosevelt many years ago and have been back lately to find things transformed to a much , much higher state than when I went there. There are many great teachers and living at the south end of the loop, which used to be a little weird has come around completely. I would have sent my daughter there without any second thoughts.
De Paul is first rate in the music department and should be considered a top tier non- conservatory choice. Really great teachers there and the setting ,on the north side of Chicago is idyllic as long as you don’t own a car.
