Okay so when I applied to UCSB I only knew that it had a top physics program (which is why I applied). I had no idea that it offered an alternative option that would be better for me (College of Creative Studies). I was accepted (into College of Letters and Science as a freshman), and I want to go there. I just checked CCS's website about applications, and they said the deadline was Feb. 28! I had no idea that this even existed before last week, and I want to get in it somehow! So my main question is: when is the earliest that I can apply? Also, I want to know what the difference between Honors Physics and CCS Physics is. Any help would be appreciated (preferably from CCS students). Thanks!

I believe that the deadline for “priority admission” is February 28th. However, you can apply to CCS any time. So, although it will be slightly harder to get, you can still apply.

Also, there is no “Honors Physics” major. There’s the Physics 20 series in the College of L&S, which is considered Advanced Intro Physics. You can also be in the Honors Program, but that isn’t just for Physics, that’s for the whole College of Letters and Science.

So should I apply right now? Or wait until I finish my first quarter? Also, what expectations do they have for applicants (High School GPA, SAT scores, etc.)?

^Just a very strong desire and curiosity to learn in-depth on your desired subject.

Don’t be sooo stats oriented; be yourself! ;)

The CCS!

The CCS has about 300 students in it. These are some of the top students at UCSB.

Become one of the best students at UCSB and then you have a good shot at getting in?

Thanks Hairy Lemon…I do have a reeeally strong interest in physics and see UCSB CCS as an excellent gateway to obtain a Ph.D in astrophysics from Caltech (someday). Hopefully the professors will take me on when they see my aspirations and desires :)

I’m glad to see you’re interested and excited about CCS. CCS really is the best place for motivated and exceptional students.

I strongly recommend you contact Christopher Wilderman at CCS so he can put you in touch with some physics faculty to figure out what to do with your application. His email address is christopher.wilderman@ccs.ucsb.edu.

Unfortunately, because the physics program is so special, they’re very selective and all the spots usually fill up when they send out their first wave of acceptances. Even so, CCS applications are accepted year-round and you can apply now or wait until you’ve started at UCSB in the Fall. There are a lot of details that take working out if you’re already at UCSB and don’t start with the current crop of first year CCS physics students, but the faculty and staff will be able to explain that to you the best. So if you want any chance at all, you really need to get in contact with the faculty as soon as possible.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, MShayefar, I just emailed him and explained my situation. I hope I can get in as I am determined to do whatever it takes to get into Caltech to pursue a Ph.D. in astrophysics!
