@sydism so we are out of state and she has the 45% academic scholarship- do you think it would be much more? Also, did your D love it?
I would love any information about the dance in the MT program. My D needs to grow A LOT in this area during college. Thanks!
@4angels , my D says that all study abroad participants get in-state tuition (she said she had to know this fact because she was a tour guide) but I thought I remembered it differently.
As for dance, while my D was there, the dance classes offered were just a few. There were two levels each of ballet, jazz and tap and a Musical Styles class (which was mostly musical theatre combinations). There is also a dance company that has a concert. They have changed dance instructors a couple of times in the past four years so I think that things are still in flux.
D absolutely LOVED her year in Italy. Did I say LOVED!!! The school (Accademia dell’Arte) was a fabulous learning experience, nestled in the heart of Arezzo. Learned sooo much and traveled like crazy (Africa, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Slovenia, Florence and more). And can speak a little Italian ?
@sydsim so as I understand it, for your D, who was a physical theatre major, they had the two dance levels and it was limited to those four types. Do you know if that was the case for the MT’s as well? Only two levels seems pretty “light” for an MT BFA program.
Thanks for sharing insights.
Some of the more recent parents/students may have a better grasp, but it’s very much a program where each student makes the most of the courses offered. @Sydsim is correct that there’s 2 levels of ballet, 2 levels of jazz, 2 levels of tap plus a basic technique class that low level dancers begin in as freshman (stronger dancers go to ballet one), and dance styles… plus master class opportunities, dance company, etc.
They’ve made it so there is the potential to take 8 semesters of dance but the central focus of CCU’s program is acting based. Triple threats are absolutely produced and people grow immensely as dancers in their time, but if you/your child are looking for a heavy dance school, CCU is (currently) not your best bet. As was said above, the dance program/professors/classes are all growing and in flux but we are not to be confused with a school that has a dance minor or anything like that!
They did actually announce at one of the audition weekends that they were writing a dance minor. I heard it directly from Adam. But yes, as Alexa said- CCU is not what I would consider a “heavy dance” school, but they do have some amazing dancers who attend. I do know one student who was taking 3 or 4 dance classes this semester, so I guess you get out of it what you put in, just like any school.
@stagedoormama So exciting !
Congrats to everyone on their acceptances! This is an in-state school for me, and my son attends as a non-MT. Of course, my daughter didn’t want to audition because she wanted to spread her wings a little further.
I just wanted to let you guys know that my son will be a senior next year, and every year that he has been there they have had to close and evacuate the school in September or October for hurricane evacuations. This might be an anomaly, but I would keep that in mind for budget planning. You might need to purchase a plane ticket home earlier than Thanksgiving! The school is EXCELLENT with maintaining communication during the process, but this year was for a much longer time than ever before. (I think three - maybe four - weeks)
Hi All! So S & I are planning on visiting CCU (for the the 1st time! YAY), during Discovery Day on 4/13. Anyone else going to be there?
@lithpool - We might be at Discovery Day. My S is on the MT waitlist, so I’m weighing whether we should go or not. We did a tour back in September as well as the on campus audition in February. I believe Discovery Day offers more information and a more in depth tour. (And we’re only three hours away).
My D and I will be visiting and sitting in on classes during our upcoming Spring Break. Looking forward to it!
Anyone know what the shows are for next season?
@gatorbridget - I had started a thread where everyone can list the upcoming shows for the 2019/2020 season. Look for the thread 2019/2020 Season of Shows and Coastal’s season is listed first.
Okay, I know I am beating a dead horse here, but we just visited an adored every second of CCU. D had 2 reservations- 1. Dance (I know). She is a singer who has had theater dance her whole life, but her dance calls during auditions were HARD for her. She will never be the girl who is placed in a dance ensemble because she’s so amazing, but she has GOT to come out of this program being able to whiz through dance auditions and keep up on tours where everyone has to dance. She will work hard, but she needs to double her skills.
Second- she got a sense there that MT kids are discouraged from doing study abroad. Any input? Thank you!
@4angels I sent you a message w/ a senior MT who is a singer/actress first and who studied abroad for you to chat with.
We are heading to CCU campus on Thursday and Friday next week (4/18 & 19). Anyone else going to be there? We would love to meet other possible incoming families. My D was accepted to BFA Acting and is deciding between CCU and one other school. She is hoping to find out they have lots of cross over for dance and voice for their Acting concentration students. Fingers crossed.
@MTmama42 - They do! I know a lot of acting majors that take voice and dance!
Just a note for anyone visiting over this week or next and planning on seeing “A New Brain”.
Please give the actress playing Rhoda a little grace. She is very ill with a respiratory infection/chest cold and has almost no voice. Ugh! Really bummed for her and praying she will improve toot sweet!
My S was accepted into the MT program at Coastal and he is thinking that the dance will not be enough for him. We visited his top choice school this week and it threw up red flags. I keep encouraging him to go to Coastal and see what they can do to enhance the dance in the program. We know someone who graduated from Coastal and LOVED it. But just trying to figure out how the dance aspect can be supplemented.
@kittym - He could always look into local dance studios if he feels he isn’t getting enough. I also know some people who have spent summers at BDC in NY just working on their dance.
