I plan on majoring in computer science or computer engineering, but with an emphasis on cybersecurity. I know a lot of people in DC who graduated from GMU in this field, but I really like UMD for its engineering program. I have already been accepted to GMU. Still need to hear from UMD in the next couple days. Help me decide. Tell me what you guys know about these programs that I can't get online.

University of Maryland is better for engineering. One thing to keep in mind is that University of Maryland is located in a ghetto neighborhood. The campus area is safe but outside the campus, not so much.

Why don’t you wait till you get accepted from UMD-CP because you don’t really have a choice right now. What state do you live in ?

Your most important cybersecurity training will probably come from a 3rd-party vendor or a non-academic certificate program anyway, so it would be best to get the CS/CompE degree first. UMD-CP is very good for either major.

I forgot to mention. I also got into Virginia Tech and University of Pittsburgh, but I’m deciding from GMU and UMD mainly because my family is moving to the DC area in the next couple years so I would like to stay near them. Virginia Tech is a little ways away compared to GMU and UMD(being a metro ride away). I am from Pennsylvania btw. I visited Tech and didn’t really like the campus and Pitt’s CS program wasn’t really appealing for me. I got rejected from CMU so these are the two schools I can see myself going to.

good decision, your transportation cost will be low and everything else will be much better that way. Are you okay with paying the high out of state tuition because non of those colleges are OOS friendly meaning they charge high rate for out of state…can you be considered in-state the next year once your parents move in ? should have applied to penn state

I ran through the numbers and tuition cost is not going to be an issue for either school given than we get a decent package. Though UMD is quite a bit more expensive than GMU

Ok, I know you said you didn’t want anything you can find online, but sometimes you don’t see things if you don’t know where to look…with your interest in cybersecurity, it’s a shame you didn’t apply by the priority deadline since that is the only way you would be eligible for the new honors program in cybersecurity (ACES)- the first of its kind for undergraduates.

Nevertheless, there are lots of seminars, events and research on cybersecurity always happening at UMD
