Cell phone camera or buy a digital?

I'm getting an lg voyager on september 1st before I go to school. Will this cell have picture quality that will suit my needs in college, or should I go ahead and buy a digital camera as well?

i would buy a digital camera, but thats just me

Depends on if you want to be that wierd person who hauls a camera around for those special moments, if you want to take pics of you and friends stick with the phone so you have a reason you're carrying a camera, if you're into photography then a cellphone can never make the cut.

The cell phone will be much more casual and normal in those types of situations. ^

Hauling around a camera isn't cool unless you're a girl and you just carry it around in your purse or something.

i own a cell phone camera, 1.4 MP so not bad at all. its definitely good for those special occasions when you need a camera but definitely not a replacement

1.4mp is terrible...the voyager has 2mp which isn't that great either

i have a 3.2mp carl zeiss on my phone and even that only takes good pictures under bright conditions, so i would get a real camera

chocolatealtoids, it depends on what situations you're talking about. If you want a camera for everyday situations like taking pics of awesome/weird sightings, a camera phone would do fine because it would be a huge hassle to carry around a full camera all the time. However if you want a camera for special occasions (i.e. get togethers, formals, general group stuff) you'll definitely want a digital camera.

Echoing jh0720, the Voyager's camera is not what you're hoping for. It's "usable" but I don't think you'll like the resolution and display when you see it on a computer. On my phone I have a 3.2MP camera that takes "nice" pics but I still wouldn't use it for special occasions.

Hopefully the day will come soon when we can have super amazing cameras on our phones as well.

they do. they have 5MP and 8MP camera cell phones but theyre really expensive

Well if you want both get a phone like this

I bought a camera.

Honestly, when it comes time to go to parties or even just for that "Girls' night out" time, you'll want to have a camera.

I just got a camera phone, and I'm not sure what mp it is, but the photo quality is pretty awful. My digital camera is at least capable of taking crystal clear photos that show up great on a computer, but the cell phone might achieve okay pictures, if I'm lucky.

Like has been said, if you just want a casual photo of something, a camera phone will work. If you want a decent to nice photo of anything, you're going to want the camera.

Ugh. Just looked at the "camera" on my LG Chocolate...1.3 MP. No wonder I've always hated it so much.

Oh I forgot to mention. chocolatealtoids, why are you getting a Voyager? Is it because of the MobileTV? If you don't care about the TV, I'd suggest getting the Dare at a very similar price. The Dare has a much, much better touch screen and is much more fun to play around with. With respect to your camera question, the Dare has a 3.2 MP camera compared to a 2.0 MP for the Voyager, and the picture quality is significantly better with face detection, SmartPic, and other features. Do some research and see for yourself.

If you like photography, obviously you'll need to get a real camera, but otherwise a phone will work for social and casual purposes. And as already stated its pretty lame to haul a real camera around if you're just taking pictures of friends, unless its small enough to fit in a pocket or purse (remember, small = expensive).

I always feel pretty lame for the opposite reason...
I don't have a camera, so I'm always using my phone when everyone else has their cameras out...
I would buy a camera.

I guess my group of friends is just really different from the norm then... we all always have a camera on us, or even two.

And it's not unusual for me to be carrying around either my digital slr or my film slr (my film slr is pretty much my baby).
