Cell phone company?

Which cell phone company would you recommend? Like which one has the best reception? My 2-year contract just expired, so I can get another plan. However, I was wondering which one was the best to use at Davis. Some of the people I met had a lot of trouble getting reception in their dorms, in the dining commons, and even outside near the dining commons…

According to the Student Housing info that was given out at Summer Orientation, "The campus has entered agreements with providers to enhance coverage and additional towers will be erected over the coming academic year by Sprint-Nextel, T-Mobile, Cingular/AT&T, and Verizon."

I have Cingular/AT&T and the reception is great outdoors but sucks in the dorms and dining commons. I thought getting a phone in Davis with a 530 area code would help, but it didn't.

I have cingular and it does not work in many areas of campus. I would recommend Verizon. But if they are really enhancing coverage for next year it doesnt matter. Just to play it safe i would not choose cingular.

If you have Cingular, you can get a 15% UC Davis discount by entering your school email address somewhere on their site...

I have cingular/att & as said before... reception outside is great, just reception in buildings sucks. The buildings on campus are old & are like metal cages which makes great shields against cell phone reception. I don't think any cell phone company gets good reception in all the buildings. If you stand right up next to the window, it helps. Everywhere else in Davis & in my apartment, Cingular works great.

Thanks fooshy for the link, and everyone else for the advice!

Do most people from out of town get 530 numbers or keep their old numbers?

the area code doesn't matter, some people switch to 530 numbers, a lot of people just keep their old number. Every cell phone plan gets free long distance anyway so there isn't a dire need to get a 530 number.

Get cingular, coverage is great all around davis. Verizon and cingular work pretty much the same in the lecture halls (1/2 bar maybe). And its good to have cingular.....just in case you get a free iphone.... =D

Whatever you do don't get T-Mobile. Owning my T-Mobile phone in Davis has been the worst cell phone experience of my life.

I almost feel obligated to start a crusade against T-Mobile after how horrific my experience has been. They binded me into a contract(not their fault - simply the reason I couldn't get out) and told me my phone was to blame. So I bought a brand new phone that they recommended and that one was just as bad.

Sprint and Verizon are going to be putting cell towers on campus.

Verizon for the win!
