Just posting this question for an incoming freshmen, what would be the best cell phone provider in the SF/Berkeley area? in terms of coverage and dead zones on campus especially relating to Unit two housing.

Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance

Everyone I know has ATT and Verizon. They both suck in general. But currently it seems like AT&T controls the bay area.

I have AT&T, and the service I get at Berkeley is not particularly good, probably because there are so many users in the same area.

Cell phone reception sucks if you ain’t att or verizon. I have t-mobile and i dont get reception in a lot of the rooms. ATT is pretty reliable.

I use a MVNO (Page Plus Cellular) that runs off the Verizon network. It’s been excellent for me.

I’ve always had (a little bit of) service in areas where my friends with AT&T don’t have service.

I have AT&T, like a lot of people. I definitely get better coverage at home in Florida than I do in Berkeley. But, service in Berkeley has gotten a lot better in the past year. I used to get really awful reception in a lot of indoor places, and until halfway through football season I could not get any reception in Memorial Stadium… Ironic, because AT&T was mentioned as a ‘proud sponsor’ every five seconds and their logo was on wristbands used for student season tickets. But, they took down service for several hours (which was really weird) and when it came back up I suddenly could talk on my cell phone in most places in my Unit 1 dorm room, and text in the elevator, and finally get some kind of service in the stadium. But before then I’d always have to go on the balcony of my floor to talk on the phone, which was pretty irritating. But it’s better now.

Also, if you need to get ahold of anyone through an At&T phone after the ‘Big Game’ against Stanford it’s gonna be impossible for a few hours if you have AT&T, or at least that’s how it was last year. Haha.

i have tmobile it sucks here. nothing anywhere. barely any at memorial stadium as well.

T-Mobile sucks at Berkeley?

Does it really matter? I’m not on the phone that much, and I could care less about where my phone works. Some of the classes don’t have reception, but that’s probably a good thing. I don’t have reception in my closet…that’s about it.

Oh and I have AT&T as well.

AT&T reception has definitely improved since they installed the new cell tower on Wurster last year. It used to be that you couldn’t even make calls during the first week of classes because people would overload the network–no longer!

Unless you’re planning to live in the Unit 1/2 mini-suites (they’re basically consecutive walls of solid concrete and a complete mobile deadzone), in the underground Academic Services Centers in the Units or eventually in a basement later on, I’d recommend AT&T. Otherwise, go with Verizon.

Crap…I have T-Mobile…

I recently switched to T-Mobile. Coverage is noticeably worse than Verizon (resold via PagePlus Cellular), but it’s fine.

Sprint coverage is alright… maybe really weak signal in the basement, and 3G is always slow in bay area…
Rarely lose coverage in Cal but voice quality may not be acceptable

I have AT&T and it’s great in campus (full bars)! But once you stray away from Cal, reception starts to suck (2 bars or so). I have a feeling Verizon will have the same case, if not, slightly better.
