My contract is about to expire. Unsure with which cell phone service to use. Could someone please rate the coverage of the various carriers (or give me their experience with their carrier)? thank you

It’s LOS ANGELES. Every carrier should work very well in LA and from my experience they all do. If you just mean their coverage in general and not only at UCLA… then that’s debatable.

I personally have T-Mobile. From my experience, it simply has the best deals. The cheapest prices overall of all the major carriers (AT&T, verizon, sprint, t-mobile). I was debating between AT&T mainly for the iPhone but after reviewing the monthly and other fees, AT&T would be significantly more money than a comparable plan at T-Mobile. So I went with T-Mobile and got a G1 phone (not quite an iPhone but it’s still awesome) and I’m very happy with everything. I think Verizon has slightly better reception in some of the more rural areas, but that’s just my limited experience…someone who’s been in the middle of no where might have a different conclusion. nevertheless t-mobile works well in every place i need it to.

^yes…but this is relative to UCLA dormitories, lounges, apartments…

T-Mobile signal tends to be weak in buildings which are well shielded, which tend to be lecture halls, some dormitories, apartments, etc. Outside is great though. AT&T is average, but Verizon is your best bet for getting signal in buildings at UCLA (especially lecture halls).

Fun fact: UCLA Anesthesiology residents recommend Verizon, as it’s the only carrier whose signals reach into the operating rooms.

i have at&t and i get no signal in pab and most of rieber court

yes i agree with Verizon. I have ATT and signal worked great for me at the sproul dorm south side on the even number side…however whenever i would go to the odd number side of the dorm, i would NEVER get signal while my verizon friends do. there are also random spots where i don’t get signal

this December when my contract expires, my family and I are going to switch to verizon and see how it goes from there

I had a T-Mobile phone at Orientation, and it didn’t get reception in my room in Rieber Terrace. It was fine everywhere else.

although t-mobile as the cheapest plans, it has slightly better coverage than at&t at ucla. t-mobile gets at least 2 bars everywhere except on first floor in buildings with multiple stories. verizon is the best for coverage as all of my verizon friends cannot find a dead zone at la, except maybe in pab 1425… depends on your phone

I didn’t get any signal in Rieber Terrace during orientation as an AT&T customer. My OC said it was just that building, which I’m hoping is true because that means my cell phone would basically be a brick in my dorm if I couldn’t get signal. Anybody know how well AT&T does in sunset village?

i got a decent signal in rieber with t-mobile. but i had a room that was on the 5th floor and had a window

ATT does decently well in most places (iphone 3g) except rieber terrance and vista… barely 1 bar or no bar with both tmobile and att, but i heard verizon is great everywhere

i thought my at&t phones were fine in my rooms in RV, RT and HS. would not work in the hall in RT though. the phone also definitely makes a big difference. my razr v3xx held a signal the best. i could walk around my room and calls would be solid. my HTC tilt would be choppy and prone to drop the call if i walked around my room.

Gotlactose:
at&t works perfectly in sunset village.

Terrace, Vista, and Summit are just god-awful for cell phone and other radio transmissions in general. I dont’ know what they put in the walls when they built those things, but they are terrible.

I have T-mobile and I had pretty good reception in RT. Lived on the 7th floor, facing Hedrick and it was never an issue. I think if you face the court area, it becomes difficult.

In De Neve Dogwood, however, I only had service in the room if I was next to the windows or was in the hall/lounge.

Else where on campus wasn’t really much of an issue except for maybe CS and underground of Young.
