Any recommendations from existing students and or their parents on providers that would be best for Cal Poly students? We currently have AT&T, but are at a point that we can switch if Verizon or another provider would be a better option.

Verizon has the best coverage here in SLO

We have AT&T and my son complains about some dead zones (spots with no service) around campus. I’ve also heard Verizon has better coverage around SLO.

I posted the same question in January. The results were pretty clear. Verizon is the best, AT&T has poor coverage on campus and in parts of the town.

Thanks all for the info. Sounds like a change of plan is needed for us.

This is a problem when my son and I both have an iPhone. We like our phones and have a contract. I am hoping that it will be okay. He will have to figure out where the coverage is best.

Verizon worked well, even inside the dorm building. Some students with other cell phone plans had to step outside (Santa Lucia) to make calls.

momofmv, yep, the iphone is our motivator as well. Unfortunately, the iphone appears to be a no-go at CP.

I’m just hoping that Verizon will start carrying the iPhone one of these days soon. I heard there’s a possibility. But, when??? :0(

When my son and I have been down to SLO for visits, our iPhone worked as we walked around campus and downtown. I’m not sure about the dorm rooms or buildings. I know it worked in the engineering building courtyard because we were on the phone with admissions. I think he will give it a try and see how it goes. We are definitiely going down for Open House, so we will test it then!

Verizon would be nice if it carried the iPhone!

If you are going to next month’s open house or to summer advising, that’s a good time to ask students how their cell phone plans work and how their iPhone performs. That’s what we did a few years ago (in the pre-iPhone days) and the students were very helpful. Perhaps cell phone companies have upgraded their coverage in the SLO region since then?

Any word on how t-mobile is down there?

My son has the iPhone and gets by with it just fine around campus. (He’s in Muir) That said, I agree that the Verizon network is currently far superior. Don’t hold your breath on the iPhone going to Verizon however I have read that AT&T is making a substantial investment to improve their bandwidth and accessibility.

Thanks gotpeter! You are always so helpful!
