I'm going to be going to McGill this coming fall(BCom) and was wondering what cell phone companies are best. Which are available?

I'm an American from Westchester/NYC area. Do you guys have verizion/cingular? If so, would anyone happen to know if the unlimited plan-to-plan carries over to plans in Canada?

I'm wondering because, while I would like a cell phone to use in Montreal, I would also like to call home without running up the phonebill too much.

you got into Bcomm? Congratulations!! In canada the major cell phone providers are Bell, Rogers, Telus...we do have cingular. I would say that Rogers is the best, but they merged with Fido and apparently Fido's cheaper for students. You can call home with phone cards that are pretty cheap. I don't think calling long distance, even if it's unlimited family calling or whatever, will be free.

that's crazy that you're from westchester, i live in rockland and am going into bcomm next year too! i also don't know what to do about cell phones, because i really do want my friends to be able to call me next year...and i have sprint right now which doesn't even seem to have a plan that would cover both places

Wow. Amazing to see people from all the same area on CC, too. I've been finding that a bunch of my friends are choosing Montreal as well.

I lived/live in the small, boring town of Bronxville, if you know it.
Took 9th and 10th grades there before going abroad to finish high school.
what about you?

Well, I asked about free minutes because I know that over here if two people have the same service, some plans allow you to talk to each other without using minutes. Yea, I guess you're right though, may as well just get a calling card.

What sort of business are you interested in anny? I got accepted for finance

now to see if i get good housing or not... if i get stuck in somewhere ****ty, im just going to rent an appt.

I have a Rogers cell phone right now and I pay about 30 bucks a month for unlimited evenings after 6 p.m. and weekends, as well as 200 daytime minutes per month. I'm probably going to just get my number changed to a montreal one, and use a calling card to phone home.

i know this is kind of late...but i was just thinking about my phone situation next year. i was thinking of having two cell phones, one american and one canadian one, and then just not having a landline. do you guys think that it would be a big problem to not have a phone in my actual dorm room? my only worry is that my roommate will have a problem with it or something...and i dont have a chance to ask them considering we don't find out about roommates until move in (i think) ahh and now im rambling

You can try calling up and asking them about the room mate...

About the land line i think that will be a problem, as im planning to share the cost of the line with the room mate. Since i have chosen the room mate myself i can discuss that with him.
Anyway even if u cant, you can work something out with the room mate, it shouldnt be that much of a problem.

a lot of my friends never got the dorm phone

honestly it's not worth it unless you call local numbers a lot. i used a calling card on mine a lot to call intl, but other than that...... the intl rates on the dorm land lines suck.

most ppl just use cell. i got a prepaid fido sim card initially, thinking that i would use dorm line most...i ended up switching to a monthly plan just b/c i used the cell so much more~

i used the $25/month unlimited fido-to-fido one (cause as i said in another post, i manipulated quite a few of my floormates and friends to join fido too)

i'm quite the connection addict and always went over the 1000 nights/weekends mins and 100 day minutes alloted each month (this is for calls to non fido ppl), so my bill was around $50/month, but sometimes it was like $40 (including the taxes and etc of course).

for next year i'm using the $30 all-of-canada fido-to-fido one cause of the unlimited nights and weekends~
