Cell Phone Reception

Does anybody know whether T-Mobile provides good coverage at Swarthmore, both indoors and outdoors? If not, which company is the one to go with? Thanks.

I know verizon and cingular are good in that area, no idea about tmobile.

Whatever you do, don't get Verizon! I had it last year, and couldn't get reception anywhere on campus . . . if I tilted my head too far to the right or the left, it would drop my call. My friends who have Cingular get reception everywhere on campus, even in the basement of McCabe!

Cingular works well.

Verizon didn't work for my son, even across campus. He may as well have not even had a cell phone. The Verizon reception was horrible!

We recently switched him to Cingular, which I hope works better, because I had to pay a lot of money to Verizon to get out of his 2 year contract. Verizon claims that they have reception in the area, so they still charge the change fee.

Does Cingular provide a discount to students? Do you know if most students have Cingular? Thanks.

Cingular has a very nice family plan ($60 for the first phone, and you can get 3 or 4 additional ones for $9.99 each, and share the rollover minutes). Nights, weekends and all mobile-to-mobile calls to Cingular costomers are free.

My son has had Verizon for 2 years and hasn't seemed to have any more problems than any cell phone would have. We had Cingular at home prior to his going to Swat and found it was horrible here (Connecticut), so we switched to the Verizon family plan before he went to Swat.

Cingular built a new cell tower right in downtown Swarthmore last spring. It's on top of an apartment building next to the PNC Bank.

Reception at all points on the Swat campus with Cingular is now excellent, even inside building.

Glad to hear Verizon does work--unhappy at the prospect of changing providers!

Mommamia,
We also use the Verizon family plan and the service is reasonably OK. Our S says that he is able to call and receive calls in his dorm, and sometimes he calls us when he is travelling on the shuttle van from Swat to Bryn Mawr or Haverford.

So, does anyone here know about T-Mobile??

Or Sprint?

I have T-Mobile. I have problems in some of the academic buildings - mostly Kohlberg and Trotter, although those are also the ones I spent the most time in - and don't have reception in most of McCabe. But no problems in dorms, around campus, Sharples or the Sci Center, so as long as you can get outside you should be okay. If anything, it can be helpful to have no reception during class! Haha.

I have verizon and its very good outside and in a lot of places, but in my dorm my service was horrible I would have to go to one spot where I could get a call through
