Cell phone reception?

My d needs a new cell phone, and we have the option of changing companies. So I'm trying to figure out which cell phone providers have good reception at most of the schools she might attend. We currently have Cingular - does anyone know how good reception is in Poughkeepsie? Is there a better choice?

Thanks.

There's a helpful thread about this in the Vassar LJ community here:

I guess the consensus is that Sprint is the best carrier. I don't know firsthand, since I don't go to Vassar! :)

I'd like to see some discussion here, so I'll chime in. My son attends Vassar and lives in Main dorm. Cingular is OK, but not great. Around campus its not so bad, but in the dorm, its usually easier for him to call me when he gets a signal and then I'll call him back on the land line in the room.

Most of my friends using a certain carrier felt the need to switch when they got here. I think it was Cingular... Could have been T-mobile.
I have Verizon, and it works splendidly. All over campus. It's a nice change from home; I can sit in my room and make a phone call (Lathrop House). My roommate has Alltell and it seems to work fine. Most other people have Verizon.
That livejournal thread is from 2004, so...

I go to High School 30 seconds from Vassar. Verizon is probably the best but cingular is not bad. Sprint is the worst whenever you call someone with SPrint you always get the not in area message. Verizon reception is strong anywhere in Poughtown.

i would definitely recommend verizon! i don't know anyone with verizon who has any significant problems in terms of cell phone reception. i do have one friend with either cingular or sprint who often gets bad reception...

Verizon is probably your best bet . . . all phones sometimes have trouble in Vassar's big brick buildings, but for the area in general Verizon has the best coverage.
